About You
It gave me a flavour of what life is like as an "accountant". I was thinking about applying for Audit, in order to specialise in Forensic Services, and the day gave me the process I would need to go through in order to achieve my goal. It was very enjoyable.
I felt very valued - I was able to ask many questions and to speak to people from the business, such as the trainees.
I received a lot of guidance - they showed me the path I would need to take in order to fulfil my career aims. Moreover, they showed me the interview process for the firm - it was very useful information.
We practised interview situations, which made me feel prepared for future job interviews. Also I had to listen and communicate with a wide range of ages, allowing me to develop and master those skills. All these life skills mentioned will help me with any job opportunities.
The Company
At the start, we were given an itinerary and we stuck to and completed all the necessary tasks throughout the day. Because we had followed the structure of the day we even finished early!
Everyone there was extremely friendly and very kind. They answered all my questions and even encouraged me to apply for the Summer School at the firm! I really loved the calm and supportive atmosphere, and I would really like to work there one day.
The firm invested their time and effort in me, informing me about the firm, the job prospects available and the necessary skills they require for their employees - I was even encouraged by a staff member to apply for the Summer School. Also, I feel that I was allowed to develop my skills and qualities while there.
During the day, I was able to talk to a trainee during lunch, this allowed me to gain a real insight into what it is like to have a full time role with the firm. Also, they explained to me "what a typical week was like", allowing me to see exactly what the role entailed.
The insight showed me the true culture of the company and the set of core values that they uphold and live by such as mutual honesty and respect. Also, it showed me the dynamics and trust that every employee has in their fellow colleagues - I saw this when the staff interacted and communicated with each other.
It was very useful - it confirmed the future career path I would like to take and showed me the skills/qualities I need in order to succeed in the work place. Also, it showed me the steps I need to take in order to apply for future job opportunities.
Everything Else
I was not advised that I would be paid or reimbursed expenses
I was able to network with current interns working at the firm and fortunately I had the opportunity to ask them a wide range of questions. Also, they gave me their company cards and said that if I had any more questions they were more than happy for me to email them.
They were very useful in allowing me to ask many questions to see what it was like to work in the firm. Also, they gave me useful hints and tips for the interview process. I felt that it gave me a clear idea of what working for BDO would be like.
The interns said that the firm goes out on regular trips and meals together. They said that these were excellent opportunities for them to network and meet new people in the firm.
Definitely - it allowed me to gain a flavour of what it is like to work there and showed me the specific steps I need to take in order to reach my desired career. Moreover, the people there were extremely friendly and were willing to answer all my questions. It was very useful and I would absolutely recommend it to a friend who is interested in that career path.
