The Role
I really enjoyed my work placement, all of the staff at Wellington College are very friendly and keen to make me feel part of the team. The grounds are beautiful and it was a pleasure to come into work every morning.
I felt valued by all of my colleagues, I felt that the work I was doing was having a beneficial impact on them and they expressed this. Sometimes if they had too much work I was able to assist in some elements of recruitment or publishing job adverts, which I think they were grateful for.
I have weekly meetings with my manager (Director of HR) in which we discuss the projects I am doing and I am able to get clarification on things if needed. This time was really important to me and showed that my manager had time for me, even though she was very busy.
I always had work to do, but have never felt swamped under too much work. The HR team in Wellington College work closely together to try and balance the work load between employees.
I feel like I was given a good level of responsibility, I have been in charge of publishing the annual gender pay gap data and reporting, something that I have found really interesting. I have also been involved in other large projects and feel like I have played a role in some team decisions. I was also given responsibility of the HR inbox, answering queries and redirecting emails.
During my placement I have gained skills in time management, I have become more aware of how outside forces can have an effect on a business. I was given a lot of autonomy which allowed me to improve on my self motivation. I have learnt a lot more about how the HR function works and has made me think about pursuing a career in HR when I graduate.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the HR office and around the whole college was really friendly and welcoming.
I think the placement was really well organised, it was set out to me in the interview process and later meetings what I would be doing and that same plan was followed through. This was the first placement Wellington College has done and in my opinion it has been a success.
I have been on lots of different training already in my placement year at Wellington College e.g. safeguarding training which I found really interesting and HR training that allowed me to lean more about the job at hand.

I would be thrilled to come back to Wellington College to work, the people are really lovely and the free staff lunches are amazing.
The Culture
As I am the first placement student to come into Wellington college HR I am also the only one. Although there isn't much of a social scene in the area all of the staff are really friendly.
I did not live in the area, I worked and commuted from my parents home so I don't know.
There are often talks and events you can go to outside of working hours.
