    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoy the experience very much because not only I had learnt a great deal about the oil industry (from distillation and extraction to market trading) but I also picked up a great trove of skillsets (i.e. python, econometrics, statistics and so on). The whole experience was all dependent on my contributions.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was fortunate enough to be in a team where everyone seemed to have something urgent for me to solve. I received very concrete feedbacks about my performance and attitudes. These advice helped me further improve my personal knowledge. I felt my contributions were treasured. Most problems threw me into multiple deep-ends, exposing myself to multiple challenges and satisfying my curiosity.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager is very special. I liked our interactions. Usually his tasks came with a brief overview. My challenges were to find how to inteprete data, come up with a problem and find the solution. Have I had any queries he were really prepared to answer any questions. His trusts for my work made me feel very confident and determined to get the best results.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Frankly to sunrise to sunset. Not because it was forced upon me. But because the work was very interesting. Since I might have only one chance of being at the firm, why not making use the most of the time there to learn as much as possible? As a result, I became a regular resident at the workplace.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As described, I were given a lot of tasks to complete. For example, I needed to complete my own study of coding (i.e. python, pandas, numpy, scikitlearn and so on), set up my own researches, and then tackle multiple tasks from predicting future forecasts to correcting the system collection techniques.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Most knowledge acquired during the internship revealed a new career path for me. The research skills are crucial for my own university work.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyday is a dress-down day. Though most people work from 9 to 5, others can come at different hours. Sometimes people work from home on Friday. However, the staffs are very efficient, delivering good projects regardless of their styles. Most importantly, everyone is very friendly and willing to help any regular interns.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Perhaps, it is very bespoke with a general guideline. Different interns have different managers with different working style. Therefore, interns will receive different unique tasks. However, managers often compare their programmes with each other to give the interns a diverse exposure to the business. This gives me a very clear understanding of what real-life work is at Bp.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm’s staffs are the greatest source of knowledge. The more I talk to people, the more knowledge I learn. On top of that, there are online courses paid by Bp to train staffs to not only comply with regulations but also to improve their own personal skills. All are free.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Depending on your passion. Should you choose a career in trading, analytics or business analytics, BP is the place for you. BP is one of the best (if not the best) oil and gas trader (which is ‘totally’ true, considering that there is only a handful of competitors). But your passion can change. So I can’t guarantee that it is the best place for you.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • My fellow interns are my closest colleagues. Eventhough knowing that the selection process is competitive, everyone was very willing to help each other, especially in our individual projects. I still remember all the other interns’ projects since we have been exchanging ideas with each other like a million times. (Technically it is an exaggeration but it’s true nonetheless)

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It’s Canary Wharf but you can still find a bargain.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It’s better that you carry the nightlife elsewhere. The offices’ lights are the only sun that you see. Just kidding but be cautious.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Community work, Societial networking and the usual.
