About You
It was a really enjoyable experience. Deeply insightful, and a fantastic opportunity to gain insight from those who work at the firm itself. I met inspiring partners who were willing to share their stories with us. Highlight of my day. It was definitely worth it, in more ways than one!
I felt very valued during my time at the firm, especially at the part of the programme where they paired us off with trainee solicitors. The 2:1 ratio allowed us to have the time to ask our solicitors-to-be anything and everything, and Alice, the trainee who I was working with was super helpful and approachable.
Guidance and support was fairly good, I feel there could have been moments where we could have got a little more information out of those speaking but to be honest the opportunity to ask questions allowed for us to get them to fill in most of the gaps - it was useful.
I have developed the skill to network efficiently. The evening event where we were graced with the opportunity to mingle with everyone from trainees to partners in truly exalted settings was the absolute highlight! I left with my pockets full of business cards and my a huge smile on my face.
The Company
Structure was brilliant, the perfect blend of interactivity and information. If I absolutely had to recommend an improvement it would be to perhaps incorporate even more of the dynamic workshops, such as the mediation workshop and corporation workshop, but only because I enjoyed it so much. I feel it was also fairly realistic and the great thing about these workshops was the fact that we had real solicitors floating about and giving us their insight when questioned.
The survey says that 10 stars means the fun never stopped and that's exactly why 10 is my response. The fun really didn't stop, even when we were carrying out more of an observational role, it was still really fun to hear about all of the different opportunities but also to learn about these little snippets of law and of course everything interactive was equally fun. Therefore, the answer 10 in my opinion is completely justified.
As I said, the firm really invested in us by having people as busy as partners give up their time to talk to us about each of their different divisions. I learnt about all of the different parts of the firm and about the while twin-engine nature of Herbert Smith Freehills.
I feel like we got a slight indication of what it would be like to work in the firm, in terms of perhaps the vibe and the atmosphere which was incredibly chill. But I don't think it gave us a full sense of what a career at HSF would entail due to its short length - really there is only so much they can show us in 2 days.
I know that the company culture is friendly, approachable, and the culture of the company is such that each member invests in each other, they care about each other's well-being as well as them keeping on top of their work and I rate that highly. This was conveyed to me during my visit.
The content of the day was very valuable in helping me decide on my future career path, I am now certain that I want to pursue a career in Law and meeting the various members of the file helped me to envision this future career more clearly. It was very insightful.
Everything Else
I have not yet been reimbursed, but I have been told I will be in the emails before hand, I am yet to submit my tube costs since they have not come up on my statement yet. The firm organised accomodation for the night for which I was also very grateful.
Every opportunity was a networking opportunity. I met trainee solicitors, I met newly qualified associates, associates and senior associates and partners. It was really useful and really fun. It gave us an opportunity to practice my networking skills and it resulted in lots of contacts and business cards - very useful.
The networking opportunities were very good. I asked a lot of questions and everything that I was unsure about was answered in at least some capacity. It was super interesting hearing about people's various routes into their job at HSF and it was encouraging to me as it made me feel that I could make it irrespective of background.
There were lots of opportunities for employees to offer back to teh community in terms of pro bono where they would do great work to people who cannot afford the legal fees completely free of charge, this sort of initiative is excellent and it was reassuring to see that HSF were really throwing themselves into this.
Yes I would one hundred percent recommend this sort of insight to a friend it was really informative, fun, interactive and most of all it allowed me to make friends with so many people from do many different universities opening the door to so many future contacts. I reckon this is the single most valuable thing that I have taken away from this experience, and the structure of the programme and the firm's general easygoing atmosphere allowed for this to happen seamlessly.
