The Role
I really enjoyed having lots of different jobs to do. Every day I had something different. I am always kept busy and I am given a lot of responsibility despite being a placement student. Working at Nissan you have to work as part of a large team despite being in different sections of the business which helps as a placement student who doesn't know where they are best fitted.
Despite being a placement student, you get give lots of responsibility from everyone who works here. The people on my team were very welcoming to me and helped me where I had questions or worries. If I was ever given a new project to work with new people, most of the time they would be very helpful.
My senior always helped me when I had problems to do with projects and I often had one to ones to check on how I was progressing through my projects. If I ever needed support on a project I felt I could go to him to ask any questions.
There were some days where I couldn't fit anything else in however as I got towards the end of my placement, I wasn't allowed to take on larger projects as they didn't want me to leave with an unfinished project. However, when I did ask for more work, they were very quick to find someone who needed assistance on their project
I was treated like the rest of the people on the team, if I was giving a large project I also had the responsibility of completing it. I could then ask for assistance from other members too. I also had joint projects where I took leading roles in some areas to help bring the project to life.
At Nissan there are loads of training courses you can go on to learn different skills from presentation skills to learning how to be assertive all the way to more technical training courses more relevant to your role. My day to day work also really helped me with my university work as I was applying what I had already learn in to a live, real world situation.
The Company
Everyone in the office is focused and keen to get things done however people are happy to chat or walk with you to other parts of the factory. People are also always friendly if you ask for advice on projects.
From beginning to end, its been a very fluid introduction into working life. We were giving a week of introductory sessions where we learnt the basics of working at Nissan. Then as we went through the year, we got regular contact from HR about placement related things.
I have completed many courses over my time at Nissan, I did everything from more general skill learning to more specific training for my role. Each one of these was approve3d with no hassle allowing me to learn as much as I could whilst I was on my year placement.

Lots of people apply to Nissan however only a small percentage get in. Nissan looks for how you are as a person as well as how you are performing at university. If you can show that you are interested and driven as an individual, that stands you in a much greater chance than others.
The Culture
Amongst placements, I made some great friends who regularly wanted to do things from rock climbing to drinks on the weekend. I also went socializing with my colleagues but that wasn't as frequent
Living where I am is relatively cheap compared to other parts of the country. I've managed to save a fair amount due to the salary and cheap living. There are some expensive areas of Newcastle however there are lots of student orientated event, deals and places.
It was really good, one of the best cities for night life. A Newcastle isn't too big its easy to get around yet has the same mount of places as a much larger city.
Some opportunities came about however they were more like every month/ every 2 months. More of the time, I would do things with other placements, not run by Nissan.
