    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I've really enjoyed my time on placement. The moment I joined I was immersed into a department that was pivotal to Nissan. I've worked with many people during my time here and I've expanded my network onto other companies that deal with Nissan. There has never been a dull moment as I've been a part of many projects, many extra activities outside of my department and I've attended many useful training courses too.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I didn't feel like a student at Nissan. I felt like a part of the team. The work I would get wouldn't be too different to work my colleagues received. And I wasn't limited because I was a student. I was able to reach out to members in my department if I ever needed some advice and felt like it was a really easy atmosphere to work in.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was assigned a mentor at the beginning of placement and he was really easy to talk to. He made me feel welcome and was very open to talking about his work and what he deals with as well as what he would expect from me during my time at Nissan. I felt supported by other employees at Nissan too including other managers from other teams.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would have days where I was busy and days where I wasn't. Given the work that I would do and being on the Server's and Storage team it made sense to me. A lot of my work depended on business changes. However, I would always have something to do and my mentor made sure of it. I was able to go to him for work and he even made sure that I was comfortable with what I was doing and wasn't too overloaded.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Throughout my time on placement, I would get a variety of responsibility. At first it was very minimal as I was still getting used to the ropes but through time as I got more comfortable with my work I was given harder tasks to do. I was supported throughout the entire process and felt more than comfortable with the different levels of responsibility I would have in different areas of my work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As my placement was significantly related to my degree, I have gained huge insight into the working world and the different layers of knowledge required to work in certain areas. I've definitely come out of this placement knowing so much more than I could have wished for. I feel very prepared for my final years and have many more options to explore for when I graduate.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Due to certain changes at Nissan, the atmosphere was quite mixed from time to time. Although, overall it was a great atmosphere. It was very down to earth with my close colleagues and I felt like it was a great working vibe. We had a kitchen close by to our desks and we were able to get up at any time to go for breaks.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Considering the changes that have been happening, the organisation of placements has been great. I was made aware of any changes that could impact my workflow at Nissan through occasional meetings and I felt very confident in my working environment as my mentor has had prior experience to dealing with placement students.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I took advantage of any opportunity I could get, and there were quite a few of them. I had more training at the beginning of my placement and I was also given online training platforms for any independent self learning. I was able to use my free time to work on any skills I wanted to work on and my mentor/team were more than happy to let me do this regularly.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There could definitely be opportunities later down the line for a graduate role. And I would be more than happy to apply if that were the case. It would be very appealing considering the current experience that I am gaining and how beneficial that would be if I were to apply for the organisation, regardless of whether it would be at the same site or in the same team.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a great social scene among other placement students. Previous placement students who had their contracts extended were very open and welcoming. Current placement students from different universities were very easy to get along with. Nissan has a little coffee shop onsite that we would use from time to time to get out of the office and catch up if we wanted some time to relax.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was living at home with my parents so the cost of living was already covered for me. It was very convenient to have my work be a short drive away. Socializing is also incredibly cheap, it is so easy to get to different places around Newcastle and Sunderland, the transport links are great. There is so much to do here and so many discounts/cheap rates on offer.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife atmosphere is great. There are so many good places and great group opportunities to take advantage of. I've been on leaving dos and christmas nights out and it has been so vibrant and fun to interact with colleagues outside of work. It's also very easily accessible and arguable one of the best places for nightlife.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were endless opportunities to get involved in out of work activities. Placement students would organise different nights out as well as the typical christmas night out and new years night out. There were so many great links to be able to get into town and interact with people outside of work.
