About You
Although I did enjoy engaging with and meeting a lot of like-minded individuals during the insight day, it was a struggle to continue to engage with the trading activities as they were rather repetitive and due to the size of the groups, it was hard to reach an overall consensus during decision making.
The staff and employees were very polite and accommodating, as at most events, I expect to be treated as a colleague rather than a first year student and they met my expectations in that aspect. Similarly, the guest speakers were very enthusiastic and intrigued to hear our thoughts and opinions.
The exercises were conducted independently which I thought was quite realistic for an insight in to a work environment and we were given feedback at the end of each session which I thought was very useful. However, we could have received more guidance on how to interpret the information for each investor.
Learning the process of analysing data and then actually using money to invest in to certain companies with the research you have conducted is useful for knowing what the role would be like if you got in to the finance sector otherwise, there wasn't really opportunities to develop skills but more so to put them to the test.
The Company
There was a rotation between 3 or 4 trading exercises with a few breaks and talks in between. The day ended with a Q&A with recent graduates as well as a discussion about the application process. There was also a networking session with current employees but due to the size of the event it was hard to hear what was said.
The atmosphere overall was very warm and friendly, but with the employees coordinating event, they did not seem very approachable and with the way everything was squashed together, agenda wise, there was not much time to ask general questions over the course of the day which would have been great.
There was not really a chance for training as it was more of an insight to what sort of work we would be conducting if we were to join the finance firm but there was a bit of development involved in the feedback we received after each training exercise round.
Due to the diverse amount of roles that there are available versus the time we had to cover everything in the space a day properly was not visible but from the general atmosphere, networking as well as the trading exercises it is possible to use the insight to decide whether or not to apply for an internship in 2nd year.
The day overall was very helpful to understand the company culture especially through networking with the firm's employees, you understand that asides from work, the staff to make efforts to engage with each other in various ways such as staff sports games and other committees that function to help the team connect.
It was very valuable as I was initially engaged in the trading exercises because it seemed exciting and interesting at first but I did notice that it became tedious eventually but I am not sure if it was because my group was too big which meant that I couldn't get my input in.
Everything Else
i was not reimbursed for travel nor the experience but although insight days themselves are not usually paid for as you are not conducting any work for the company, it is common courtesy to reimburse travel which I feel like the company should make an effort to do so in the future.
There was a networking session for 1 hour and minutes which was sufficient time to discuss however I don't agree with having lunch and networking at the same time as it makes it even harder for everyone to understand each other in such a big event where its very noisy.
There were a lot of social opportunities especially with the group activities and the break in between some of the sessions, that gave us the chance to network with other attendees, add them on linked in which was very helpful because I know a lot of people might meet each other again.
yes I did through networking and I found out that they conduct a lot of events outside of work such as sporting events but I was not able to hear much due to it being quite noisy and busy but from what I remember they do make sure there is a good work life balance.
I would recommend the insight day because it was well structured and they give you a lot of chances to network and meet with like minded individuals however, I would prefer if the insight day was not conducted in two single rooms but perhaps a rotation that would allow us to see the rest of the firm.
