About You
The Barclays Technology insight week was a great insight into various roles at Radbroke. We got a tour of the campus and saw the scale of technology at Barclays. This gave us a great understanding of how life would be working at the Radbroke campus. All the staff were friendly and approachable, I didn't feel stupid as staff answered any questions we had.
Everyone was friendly and didnt make us feel like we didn't know anything. Barclays is big on their values (Respect Integrity Service Excellence Stewardship) and I saw this throughout the week. Everyone was included and the week was well organised so we got to learn as much as possible. It made me feel like Barclays really wanted us to succeed.
A lot of guidance throughout the week on the different technology roles within the analyst and developer side. Many talks from senior staff and what they do as well as graduates. Three amazing networking events with graduates and senior staff in an informal setting where we could ask as many questions.
This technology week gave me a lot of information about Barclays and the roles that may be available within other companies too. More of an insight than actually working and using skills from university. I now have a clearer idea of which field within technology I would like to go into.
The Company
Very structured event from organised accomodation to transport to and from the technology centre. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was paid for by Barclays. There was a trip to Salford from the hotel in the morning one day to get an insight into the eagle labs at Barclays. Many talks organised and work shadowing too so we got to experience different areas of technology.
Everyone I have spoken to has been friendly. These include other interns, the recruitment team, graduates, other technology professionals and even staff working at the canteen. Everyone had a positive vibe and I could tell they were happy working at a campus based technology centre. This has been the most friendly place I've been to.
I have developed a lot throughout this week in terms of team work skills as there was a session on leadership and followship which allowed me to work in a group and see the kind of person I am. I also had a group project which development many skills such as organisation, team working and time keeping.
We had many opportunities to ask graduates and senior staff members what their job consists of and their day to day activities. We also got to see how flexible it was to change between roles within Barclays. This whole week was a big insight into different roles and work shadowing helped to see what staff do.
Barclays is big on their values. They have Barclays RISES (Respect Integrity Service Excellence Stewardship). I saw this throughout the week and in different areas as people respected others and worked together. Even chefs in the canteen were friendly and had these values. I feel that the values Barclays holds are similar to mine.
After the insight week, I now have a clearer idea of what I would like to do or which fields I am best suited to. I also like the campus feel and believe it's a good transition from university. Many different technology roles are available within Barclays and we had an insight into many of them.
Everything Else
Barclays reimbursed transport costs and also paid for our breakfast and dinner at the hotel. They paid for the accomodation and transport to and from the technology centre. We had £7.50 to spend within the Barclays offices for lunch or any snacks/ beverages we needed. I didn't feel that I couldn't get something or that I was disadvantaged in ant way.
Many talks from senior staff and what they do as well as graduates. Three amazing networking events with graduates and senior staff in an informal setting where we could ask as many questions.
The networking events were informal and friendly so I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Food was paid for at the events and I got to speak to various staff. Graduates were very useful and gave us tips on interviews and the transition. Senior staff were helpful and told us about their path to their current position.
Staff can go to the gym, play football, have spa treatment and there are also tournaments (FIFA tournaments).
Amazing opportunity which I think everyone can benefit from. This will not only be a useful insight into technology but also give experience with interviews and group work.
