About You
Compared to what I had heard about similar spring insight weeks, Barclays seems to have one of the better ones around. I appreciated that we were afforded a detailed look/networking opportunities at each of Barclays banking areas. Along with this, the only stressful part of the week was the last day directly before our assessment. But of course, I am glad we were given the chance to apply for the later internship.
I felt like the recruitment team and the entire Barclays organization devoted a significant amount of resources to our cohort throughout the time of the spring week. The senior banking professionals were especially helpful in providing detailed explanations to questions we asked them at networking sessions and presentations. Throughout the programme I could tell that Barclays wanted each of us to find our place within the company.
The recruitment team was always on standby to guide us through our day and to answer any questions about the daily schedule or the bank that we might have. Similarly, the other barclays employees we met were friendly and happy to chat with us and answer questions about what we could expect next in the programme
I wouldn't say the practical issues covered have much to do with my degree. That being said, the emphasis on group work and personability is broadly applicable to most situations we will face throughout university and beyond. Naturally, the first-hand look we were afforded of the investment bank will help to inform all of us of a career path that complements our own skills and tendencies.
The Company
I thought each of the days flowed nicely from one area of emphasis to another. I appreciated that we spent one day focusing solely on the IBD division and the next on the market oriented side of Barclays. I know that time is short, but if it were possible I would appreciate some extra time to pick between markets and banking after the trading floor tour and research insights.
The general atmosphere of the programme was one of excited nervousness at the onset, and then as the program developed, one of interest and familiarity. Of course, I would be lying if I said the assessment day was not stressful, but I don't think there's any way around that to be honest.
Throughout the programme it was evident that Barclays wanted each of us to be succesful in moving on throuhj the recruitment process. To that end, we were taught a great deal about the nature of work and social life within thr Barclays corporate structure. I appreciated that the recruitment team took the time to craft these educational programmes for us.
While we did not complete any work that pertained to Barclay's core business areas, we were involved in the completion of two cade studies, one within banking and one within markets. These two case studies, along with opportunites to network with a high level of Barclays employees, helped us to gain persective of the day in the life of a Barclays employee.
The emphasis on the Barclays core values became clear as the programme progressed. The values also shone through the work and daily activites discussed, from the attention to volunteering and service to the focus on excellence present in all divisions of the bank. I appreciated this chance to take a look at this aspect of Barclays bank.
Before the start of the programme, I was not exactly sure what I wanted to do with my life and career, whether it be investment banking or another path. After thid programme, I can say with confidence that I would be happy to work as a part of the Barclays investment bank.
Everything Else
Barclays covered the cost of my transportation to and from London, which made the week accessible as I was travelling from Scotland. We were also adequately reimbursed for our costs throughout the week in London. Considering the expense of daily transport as well as dinner and other supplies, Barclays financial coverage made the programme all the more accessible.
From the very first night, Barclays set up events for us to network with and learn from senior members of their investment bank. From networking drinks to provided lunches, we were able to comfortably meet with a wide range of personelle from all areas of Barclay's coverage groups. This was one of the best aspects of the programme.
I enjoyed the drinks event following our first day at the bank. It was a great opportunity to learn from senior members of staff as well as to break the ice between all the participants of the spring week itself. I'm glad they set up that event for us as it lent us a bit of group cohesion before the assessments later in the week.
From the very first day we learnt about the various diversity and inclusion groups active throughout the investment bank. From the gender inclusion groups faith forums and intergenerational organizations, Barclays provides a good deal of opportunity to find an extracurricular network for yourself outside of the work you have assigned on a daily basis.
Yes absolutely. Throughout my brief search for something resembling empoyability after university, Barclay's spring week was definitley the thing that will help the most to get my foot into the door of the professional world. As an international student, this is especially useful, as I do not have access to the same extensive networks that a UK native might enjoy.
