    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed working with the children and getting an understanding of the environment I would be in if I were to become a nursery worker. The first half of placement the staff were really supportive and let me put my training into practice but the second half they were rude, ignored me and didn't help me when I was struggling. There was no communication or recognition for hard work. I struggled with placement through the last 4 months as a result and didn't feel during that time I learnt anything except that I didn't want to work in a nursery.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The first half of placement in the baby room the staff tried to get to know me but I felt like I was an outsider. During the second half during pre school there was no effort made and I felt isolated. There were some that occasionally tried to talk to me but overall I didn't feel welcome

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • During my time in the baby room I felt fully supported and was giving lots of guidance. My mentor was always around and always gave me constructive criticism and acknowledged the good work that I did. However in the preschool although my mentor did help me obtain information for my portfolio she didn't acknowledge any good work that I did and wasn't around to support me. The criticism was harsh and not professionally leading for me having to go to management and the university for a resolution

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It was busy working with the children. There is always something that needed doing, either tidying up after them, helping them, completing the planned activities with them for my portfolio etc. There were times where it was quieter such as sleeps, and if they working nicely independently but it was still important to make sure I was busy supervising them throughout

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I wasn't allowed alone with the children as I was a student and I wasn't allowed to change nappies or help prepare food for the same reason. However they allowed me to do my planned activities, read to the children, set up the room for them with toys out. They would get me to help them with sleeps, eating and cleaning and tidying plus assisting them with their planned activities.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • A lot of what I learned on placement was the downside of working in a nursery. However I did learn how to have more confidence, plan activities for children using specific criteria laid out by the eyfs and I learn which areas of the job I loved and hated. I didn't learn skills of communicating with parents and process of changing nappies because i wasnt given the opportunity

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Overall they all seemed like they got on really well. There were times that they argued and the atmosphere was awkward and that was often taken into the classroom along with the drama. They spent more time on the drama sometimes than the children. I felt excluded from everyone so the atmosphere for me felt awkward all the time even when everyone was happy and having fun as I felt out of place

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Not organised at all. There was lots of times no one had any idea what was happening. During my mentor report I got failed on things that I had done in the room but because my mentor had been in the office she hadn't seen it and it hadnt been communicated back to her. It wasn't until I raised my concern that the cctv was looked at and the staff were actually asked and they realised I had passed it could have cost me my degree if I hadn't raised the alarm

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They didn't train me at all or invest anything in my. I was treated as more of an inconvenience than a student and they couldn't wait for me to leave. They left me to my own devices and even when I tried to ask for help, training or assistance they were rude and blunt and made me feel horrible

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I wouldn't work here after my experience of how they treated me and other staff that didn't meet there 'aesthetic'. I have anxiety and panic attacks. I told them so they were aware but my mental health was used against me during my mentor report and my time there and even used as a reason not to hire me. I never once had a panic attack there though I nearly did and I had to contest their discrimination against me and they still kept some of it in the report. It's not the place to work if you want understanding.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • No they kept within there cliche of friends and often isolated the students offering little to no help to them what so ever. When I left I wrote a card and bought chocolates to say thank you for having me for this placement..But I didn't get one thank you back for my hard work. I didn't even get a goodbye

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived round the corner from the nursery so it'll didn't cost a penny to travel there and I often brought a pack lunch. The nursery was close to the university so if I was hungry I'd walk there for lunch and that was my only expense whilst working there.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There isn't a massive nightlife for students in Chichester. There is one place called the vestry that everyone goes to and is the only thing closest to a club. There are restaurants and bars open but some can be expensive for students. One popular place has just been closed down.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • No there wasn't. Between completing placement hours, attending lectures, completing assignments and working to pay the bills there was no time left for socialising. Plus I didn't have a good relationship with anyone from placement to go out with them outside of work. I wasn't included in outside events they planned as a team as I was just a student.
