About You
The insight week met all the things I was looking for. I was looking to get a greater knowledge of Mace and the role of project managers. The first point was definitely met as the talks given about the company and especially with graduates really helped. It would have been better if we had more time on-site or work shadowing if that was possible.
The firm was very friendly from the receptionists to [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and all the employees who talked to us. They all made us feel comfotable. We were all treated as potential employees of Mace which was nice of them to do. Also, the free lunches every day of the week which was very nice.
All the questions I had during the insight week were answered straight away so I was never feeling like information was lacking from the week. The project manager I shadowed was also very helpful as he showed me around the whole site and was very willing to answer any questions I had.
I don't think my skills towards my degree (civil engineering) developed as there wasn't much technical knowledge but that was ok as the interview and assessment centre workshops were very useful. Also, I have a clearer idea of my future prospects in Mace and project management after attending the insight week.
The Company
It was good to have an introductory day on the first day as it not only helped us settle in but also to get to know our fellow peers in the group. Monday and thursday possibly had too many presentations as it was hard to keep up with all the information.
Everyone was really friendly, I was feeling a bit nervous before starting the week, however that all dissapeared once we started as I felt really comfortable in Mace's working environment. One suggestion would be to mix up the tables more as we only did that on the last day and I met some nice people and I wish this happened earlier during the week.
As the week is an insight week, it's impossible to invest too much in us, but I think the main purpose of the week was fully met. I came out of the week with a much better understanding of the company and project management which were my aims going into the week.
As the week was quite intense, we had the chance to meet a lot of graduates which was really helpful as they have only recently been in our position so could relate really well with us. They gave a lot of really good advice about the company and role within.
Spending time as the office and site gave me a good comparison of both working environments. In both I could see a strong working culture as all the employees were really friendly and approachable. They didn't treat us like we were beneath them which left a lot of positive vibes.
Everything Else
Having a flat in London, this was completely ok with me as an insight week isn't that big of a deal so not being paid isn't that important. The knowledge of being reimbursed came as a nice surprise to everyone which was nice, however if not from London, possibly not being paid might be more of an issue.
There were a lot of opportunities to talk to graduates during the week. The lunchtime with graduates was probably the least useful as it came on the last day so I didn't really have any more questions to ask and just wanted to have lunch instead. However, the other events were all useful.
The Mace volunteering day was the most interesting 'out of work' thing I took from the week. The ability to be so flexible about what you can do for your volunteering day sounded like a great thing to do, especially the cycling through italy that some employees did to raise money.
If interested in Mace or the construction industry, I would definitely recomend the week.
