About You
It was an amazing experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I got to meet many first year students and got a feel about the culture about the firm. The career fair was also a really good opportunity to find out about many departments within the firm. However, one thing that I found slightly repetitive was the negotiation/mediation workshop.
I feel very welcomed in the firm. Everyone, including the trainees, graduate recruitment team as well as the partners, was really friendly. Socials at the roof top bar was really fun as well - it was really nice that trainees and partners took their time to come have a chat with us
Again, everyone was really welcoming and they really encouraged questions. I didn't feel like i would be judged if I were to ask too many questions. I have had great insight into the work of a commercial solicitor through the shadowing of a trainee who was very patient in answering all our questions.
I was very fortunate to have received so much useful information that would help me immensely in terms of career choice, choice of firm, all of which are extremely valuable. it was through talking to partners that i knew about the workings of the firm and their career progression in general.
The Company
I have to say that it was really amazing. I had a wonderful experience talking to trainees and partners from the firm, which was extremely valuable. One downside was probably the rather repetitive task of the mediation workshop followed by the negotiation workshop. There could be more variation e.g. the corporate negotiation workshop could be changed into a case study workshop.
The general atmosphere was extremely pleasant. Everyone was very friendly and all the participants were very eager to learn and asked lots of questions. The people I have talked to also said that they really liked and enjoyed being at the firm. There were many interactive workshops as well which means that we are constantly engaged.
I think I won't be able to say much but I think it was a lot of investment on first year students considering how well-structured the workshop was because we all agreed that we have taken in a lot of information. There was also a lot of opportunity to talk to trainees and partners in the firm.
The workshops, Q&A sessions, and conversations with trainees and partners gave me great insight into what it means to have a full time role with the company. I am also very grateful for one of the trainees whom I was shadowing because he gave an honest, balanced account about life at HSF.
The fact that the trainees and partners took their time off to attend workshops, Q&A sessions and have conversations with us first year students says quite a lot about the culture of the firm. I am also very grateful for one of the trainees whom I was shadowing because he gave an honest, balanced account about culture at HSF.
The workshops were really great as they gave me an insight into what it means to be working in a commercial law firm. I have also had the opportunity to talk to trainees and partners which means that I can ask them for opinion about my decision for my future career path.
Everything Else
I thought it was very nice of the firm to reimburse for accommodation as not many firms do that. However, we are not paid which is fair enough because there are so many of us and we did not do much fee-earning work technically so it wouldn't make sense for us to be paid salary.
Workshops, Q&A sessions, career fairs, socials and networking lunches were all great networking opportunities with employees of the firm which is very valuable and I think that there is an adequate amount of networking opportunities with everyone in the firm including trainees, partners and graduate recruitment team. which is great.
The networking/ social event opportunities were amazing honestly. However, the socials at the Boundary the roof top bar could be a little bit better because there were way too many people and it gets pretty noisy and difficult to listen to people talk a lot of the times. I would say there could be a more suitable venue for that.
I did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work through trainee panel discussions. Apart from that, talking to the trainee I was shadowing also gave me great opportunity to know more about it. I have also learnt about the pro bono work people can get involved in.
I would totally recommend this insight to a friend. It was really nice to be able to have a feel of the culture of the firm, meet students from all universities who are interested in commercial law and talk to trainees and partners about their journey . It was a great experience. Thank you so much!
