About You
It was an insightful 2-day experience. Influential speakers shared their journey to EY and their division. I also enjoyed the flow of the event however, wished more case studies were implemented to challenge our critical thinking. The insight day could also be longer to develop team bonds, which will essentially allow us to get a feel of the team working environment
Fortunately, I was part of an inclusive team where our contribution was valued and we were each given opportunities to share our thoughts without feeling judged. I think placing us in random tables was a good way to share different knowledge and meet like-minded people who more or less have the same goal as you. Because we resonate with each other, our opinions are more recognized by each other
Though activities were scheduled in an orderly fashion, there were times where we weren't given much instructions on the specifics/details of the task. Our table host also had not much idea of what was going on and therefore, staff could have been prepared beforehand or given a briefing to provide more support
We used PEST analysis to come up with a proposal for the case study. This developed my critical thinking whilst utilizing PEST which will be beneficial as my module includes the analysis of PEST to guide in business decision making. I was also able to develop my teamwork and interrelationship skills which will be beneficial in both the corporate world and at school where I will have group projects.
The Company
As mentioned, activities were scheduled in an orderly fashion however more instructions could have been given out for clarity. I felt that there were too many speakers and less initiating activities, and therefore did get a tad bit repetitive at times. Regardless, the structure was coherent and every upcoming event was well introduced
Full of bright and innovative individuals, I was fortunate enough to experience the buzzing atmosphere of Discover EY. The atmosphere was not overly competitive; instead, it was more supportive and welcoming as everyone was open to each others' ideas and came in with therefore an open mind. Employees of EY were also very helpful in providing advice
Anyone that participated in the event could tell it was well invested and a lot of time and effort was put into it. However, in terms of personal training and development, I felt that the insight did not really train my mind or put me in a state of what it would be like as an advisor/auditor/etc
As mentioned, I was not given much insight into how it would be like working as an advisor/auditor/etc, in EY. Instead, speakers shared their experience however if participants did more case studies or were exposed to examples of what an employee would face at EY then that would have allowed me to get an insight into a full-time role with EY
From the insight programme, I've definitely learnt that EY is a place full of friendly, innovative and supportive employees. The insight programme definitely gave a sneak peek of what employees at EY are like, and how the firm lives up to the standards of being listed as the "Top 10 Employers"
I was more exposed to the different divisions of EY. Thinking that EY was purely focused on management consulting, I was proven wrong and instead found that there were so many more divisions and aspects to it. Whether it to be tax, assurance, transactions or advisory, there is a place for everyone and I found myself steering towards advisory and transactions
Everything Else
Participants of this insight were not paid however we were reimbursed for our travel and accommodation expenses. Specifically, those who lived more than an hour away were given a night at Hilton London Bridge which is only 1 minute away from the EY building, making it all the more convenient and welcoming.
Fortunately, the insight programme allowed you to network and connect with EY's employees during the lunch period, which made networking made casual and relaxed, rather than the situation and conversations being artificial. Not only were we put in a casual, relaxed setting, but there were tons of employees to talk to, each from different divisions and therefore had more of an insight into the different aspects of EY
As mentioned, we were able to connect and network with EY's employees during lunch and even had time to talk with them during the breaks. On day 1 of the event, speed networking took place at the end of the day to allow us to get an insight into the different divisions of EY. The talks were short however were direct and got straight to the point, considering the limited time we had
Voluntary work and social programmes seem to be heavily emphasized at EY. We learnt about EY Foundation, an individual charity that works with young people in the UK to realize their career ambitions as well as the Women's Network, placing importance on the wider issues and implications outside of work
The relaxed yet stimulating environment of the insight programme allowed me to explore my career path and gain knowledge, without feeling judged or left behind. It seems that at school many people know what they want to do however with this insight programme, participants seemed to be open to the idea of not sticking to one conventional career path. Therefore, the insight programme was full of open-minded and high-achieving individuals
