About You
I enjoyed the insight quite a bit. Particularly the first few days as the insight was new and well planned. However the last few days it got quite repetitive as all the people and fast streamers I talked had the same thing to say and there were times were I was left with nothing planned so it got a bit boring.
I left quite valued as everyone talked to me and made sure I was comfortable at the civil service and my allocated department. However I don’t think the part where I was shadowed my fast streamer was well planned, there was quite a few gaps in the last few days and could be quite boring.
They were good with support and guidance. If I asked them any questions they were willing to answer them. Many people in my department were very honest and gave an overarching view of the civil services and how they treat employees and what schemes they have in place to further increase diversity.
I don’t think this will increase my skills within my degree. The insight has given me an indication of whether or not I want to go into this stream of work and if it is for me. I also have good contacts now if I decide to perhaps go into the civil service.
The Company
The structure was good few days and could be improved other days. The days you’re with your fast streamers depends on the fast streamer itself, so mine was helpful in bringing about work for me but they were also busy so couldn’t make as much time for me. I wasn’t able to attend any meetings which was one thing I was looking forward to.
The atmosphere was really good. Everyone was welcoming and wanted to get me involved. They also informed me on how the civil service worked and the people I talked to from the other departments were also very helpful and were open to talking to me. The head of fast stream programme was also very helpful and open to talk to.
They invested enough in us to inform us how the civil service works. They didn’t put together any development workshops which would help us understand the day to day work in the civil service. There was no sense of personal training or understanding how the work would be day to day.
Shadowing the fast streamer showed how they work everyday but they only explained what the overall department did. I wasn’t able to follow my streamer and attend meetings or see what they actually do everyday. I wanted more than just sitting next to them during the day so the scheme could be improved.
Working with the employees meant I understood a lot about the work culture at the civil service. They are very friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere was very relaxed. There was no stress related to work. However this might be a limited view as there was a limited insight into the company.
The content was really valuable in the sense that I now know whether I want to work in the civil service or not. I was also able to understand if I want to go into a particular stream such as the statistics or the economist stream as I talked to the different employees
Everything Else
There were a lot of opportunities. We had a panel of fast streamers and a networking session to meet them and understand what they do. It was also important to understand how recent graduates find the atmosphere and the extent of support within the civil article. There was also panel sessions on Monday and Friday which was helpful.
The networking events were okay, they had plenty of them. But
I would recommend it if the person is interest in get involved with the civil service or wants to find out more about how it is to work there. It helped me decide if the civil service is for me or not. It also gives you good helpful contacts in case you decide to further your career with the civil service.
