The Role
I had an incredible experience at my placement. I got to learn a lot about several new fields of interest and expand my future job prospects. GE also has a lot of opportunities for learning and growth. They also have a lot of on-sight initiatives such as volunteering and arranging social events so it is easy to get involved.
Everyone I worked with treated me with a lot of respect. No one looked down on me for being an intern, but rather I was treated like everyone else. I did some work on creating several social initiatives on the site and I was rewarded with an "Impact Award" which is monetary award for contributing to the site. GE does a lot to make employees feel valued.
My supervisor paid my travel expenses to go to another GE location so that I could be hosted by a legal team for the day. He also worked with me to get time off so that I could complete a vacation scheme. My supervisors were all very supportive of advancing my career opportunities.
Some days were very busy and some days were slow. It evened out.
In my role after we were trained we were trusted to handle cases by ourselves. We were given a lot of autonomy and trust. But we could still ask questions whenever we needed to.
I was able to build my network while within the company. I plan on pursuing a career in law and I was able to shadow and speak with several people in the business about the industry. I was also given software training and interview training. I was able to use my network within GE to secure a legal vacation scheme for this summer.
The Company
There was a friendly atmosphere. The dress code was casual and there were lots of opportunities to step away from your desk and mingle with other teams. My site hosted potluck lunches once a month, weekly walks, and summer and Christmas parties. You are also allowed to take breaks and get coffee or tea whenever you want to.
We had an intern program within the company where all the GE interns attended calls once a month giving us insights into how to get the most out of our intern experience. On these calls interns can volunteer to share insights. We also had outlines of where she should be in our progress throughout the internship.
GE signed me up for over 15 online courses to educate me on important business and legal considerations in the work place. I was also allowed to sign up for extra learning opportunities such as excel training and Brexit discussions. My company also paid my travel expenses for a personal development day at another site.

In the field that I work in there is not much prospect for a job after graduation. However the placement at GE does help you get employed at other firms. The employees here are great about offering recommendations and assisting in other job opportunities. Other interns in different fields at my site do have a great rehire prospect.
The Culture
There are roughly 15 interns at my site and we met up a few times for dinner and drinks. We all sat together in the canteen and worked on site projects together. We are all spread out throughout the building but have plenty of chances to meet up throughout the day.
The cost of living depends on where in the area you chose to live. I got a house about half an hour away from the office and paid about 400 a month on rent and bills. The area I work in also has a great night life and plenty of things to do.
Outside of work my team hosted other GE employees at our site and we would plan fun evening events. We had several dinners and events outside of the office. We also had leaving parties for employees leaving the company where we would hang out at the pub for a bit. We also did volunteer events for the homeless shelters and animal shelters in the area.
