About You
I really enjoyed this insight as it was a really good insight into banking careers and helped me to learn about what I did and didn't like about banking. It was a good balance of desk placement with talks across the two weeks which allowed a larger insight that most spring weeks.
people were all happy for you to talk to them about any questions you had, whether it was a question about what a word meant or just generally about their job. The people on my desk were always willing to give me new things to look at during the weeks.
Nomura's buddy scheme is so beneficial as there is always someone there to ask daft questions to and they'd give guidance too. HR also gave lots of guidance and support and helped you to improve to ensure that you can make the most of your time on the spring week
this spring week was really good in having a good balance of learning more technical skills as well as improving soft skills, such as debating which we had half a day dedicated to this in order to improve. It was also very beneficial to have case studies as these will really help with the interview process for any future banking internships/jobs
The Company
The insight program was really well structured with a clear timetable of events going on throughout the two weeks which meant it was hard to forget what was going on during the day. The desk placements were very varied day to day but that follows from the nature of the business. The only issue was people not knowing what time to begin on the second day when our desk placements started.
The atmosphere was overall very positive with most people you met being extremely friendly, but there were some teams that were more reluctant for interns to shadow them due to how busy they were. This sometimes came across a little cold but it was understandable. Events like meeting the other group of interns was also good for the atmosphere.
They invested a large amount of time into our personal training, from the first day giving us a course in the basics of investment banking to get us all up to scratch but also iterated the important of soft skills which included a half day debating session to improve communication, public speaking and confidence.
Since we were on a desk for 8 out of the 9 days, it gave a very very good understanding of what a job at Nomura would be like. We came in at the same time as the team we were placed with, helped with projects and also attended meetings with them.
This really helped understand the principles behind Nomura and showed that they really care about employees.
The desk placements made such a difference in terms of finding out if this is a good career for you even if the desk turned out to be a bad fit. It helped me decided what I didn't like but the ability to speak to so many other teams during the week has shown me new teams i would consider working for.
Everything Else
Paid daily and was reimbursed for travel to accommodation from your home/uni (no accommodation provided)
Every day you could network if you wanted. You could talk to everyone at your desk but also anyone from other teams. The buddies were especially helpful for this since they could help you reach out further in the business. THere was also a networking lunch with senior staff.
They were enjoyable and also very informative. Great oppurtunity to meet many new people
Not covered specifically, but some talks about some of the departments went into detail about this.
This week was so beneficial in helping me to decide if this is a career i would consider further. People are happy to help answer all of your questions and the networking oppurtunities are great. This spring week has the added advantage of being on a desk to get a real feel rather than just classroom talks.
