    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • Really enjoyed the internship. It was structured very well allowing me to make the most of the two weeks I was here. As well as this, there were both training and desk placement which allowed me to get full exposure to what is on offer. Also, everyone I met were really kind and helpful.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • No one made me feel like I was an intern. There was a big class which I felt helped as you knew you weren't the only one in the situation. But even though I was the only intern on the desk I was welcomed, and they made an effort to talk to me, keep me busy, as well as invite me for lunch everyday.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • During the internship we were given a timetable with scheduled sessions (such as training and networking). But for the rest of the time we were allowed to sit on a desk, as part of the team. During this time on the desk I was given jobs to do here, and each member were always willing to answer whatever questions I had.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The key skills I learned during this internship were; communication, public speaking and problem solving. All these skills are essential for my degree but furthermore for everyday life and beyond. An outside organisation came in and taught us about public speaking, and within a couple of hours I felt like I had developed tremendously.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Very well structured. On the first day there was a full day of activities which all ran smoothly. There were clear instructions and timetables for where to be and what time, for the rest of the two weeks. As it was a longer internship there was also a chance to sit on a desk which was very valuable.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • There was a great atmosphere around during the internship. HR were welcoming and very useful during the whole duration planning a range of activities, training session and networking. At the desk where I was placed, the atmosphere was also great and everyone was very approachable. Understandably the atmosphere could be tense at times if there was a lot to be done, but I was kept pretty busy.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As mentioned earlier, there was training on the first day which helped to develop my understanding in key topics such as finance, economics and accounting. There was also a public speaking session, which I found very useful in developing key communication skills which was arranged by an outside organisation. As I was only here for two weeks I don't feel like the company could really invest in me.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Having done the internship, I am much more knowledgeable about how the company operates as well as the atmosphere within the work place. As I got a chance to sit on the desk which the employees it allowed me to see what they got up to day to day and also gauge what the hours were like.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • To some extend yes. This was done more through talking to people who work for the company, and hearing their experiences. It was also useful to hear if they had worked in another bank to be able to see how exactly the culture at Nomura is different to a competing bank.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Before doing the internship I wasn't 100% set on finance, but since doing the internship, I have decided that finance is the career path I would like to take. I gained a lot from talking to different people from different backgrounds as well as from different parts of the bank.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was paid during this internship instead of getting expenses reimbursed. This wasn't the main driving factor for me completing the internship but it is definitely useful as living in London is expensive. There was an option to also get travel form uni to London reimbursed which is very useful if you are travelling from abroad.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • there were opportunities for networking during this internship. There were 3 scheduled networking events; one with desk contacts, one with other interns (as there was a different programme running parallel) and another with senior members of the company. it was also recommended that you emailed around different parts of the bank to have a talk with different product/sector teams.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • as mention above there were networking opportunities. There were 3 scheduled networking events; one with desk contacts, one with other interns (as there was a different programme running parallel) and another with senior members of the company. As for social events, I was invited to lunch each day with members of my team, and there were drinks after work on a Friday.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • this came about from talking to members individually. From talking to someone in technology there are societies available such as learning about Japanese culture as well as help with public speaking. As well as this, one of the ED's in my team does a lot of work with the women's programme within the company which I found very interesting.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I would absolutely recommend this insight to a friend. Considering I was only at Nomura for 2 weeks I have learnt so much and hopefully made some contacts for life. I have seen exposed to a range of different situations, met a range of different people and been allowed to do a range of different tasks.
