About You
I was in the tech stream and found the insight to be extremely helpful. Being assigned a buddy was useful as we could ask them whatever questions we wanted and so I learnt a lot of things compared to insight weeks at other places that are very structured. It's difficult to get to know a company in just 3 days to a week.
If I came back to the firm I would feel like I knew these people for way longer than 2 weeks. Everyone is super friendly and actually genuinely wants to help you. Some of the people on my team sat down with me and even helped me look at my own potential career which I found extremely helpful.
As I said earlier, my team in particular were extremely helpful. They were aware of the knowledge I had and didn't expect me to know everything, as university is very different to real life application. So they knew how to explain things to me, and not throw out to much jargon. Even when I had questions they were very friendly and honest.
I can already see myself replicating some of the skills and using the knowledge I learnt here in future university group projects and even in my potential job. The skills I developed were useful in terms of the technical side which I think I lacked prior to coming here and so I will definitely be able to use them beyond.
The Company
For 2 weeks, we had almost no structure as you were basically meant to be working for the company and so you weren't given a rough guideline of where you were meant to be. However in hindsight, the lack of structure helped you to immerse yourself better in the team and company.
Once you got comfortable in the company and your team, you were booking meetings with so many different people and in tech you were even given some projects to do so I always felt like I was doing something useful with my time and because of the constant feeling of being busy it made me really enjoy the past 2 weeks.
Again, members of my team sat down with me and focussed on my own potential career. They gave me a layout of the firm and the different jobs on offer, the movement of roles within the firm etc. Following this they asked me about myself so we could work out what role I would suit. Aside from this they were active and taking time out of their work to sit with me too.
It helped me too envision myself at the firm in the future as well as understand how much and what work the different teams do in the company. I was able to talk to people of different positions to understand how much work they all undertake and what they focus on.
We were exposed to events specific to the company and everyone was very open in showcasing the company culture and how it had developed from the LB days which was extremely interesting. Having seen other investment banks it was also interesting to see how Nomura differs from other banks in terms of culture.
Extremely helpful as it has confirmed that I would like to work in this sector as well as this stream (technology). I also felt like to an extent the firm wasn't just advertising themselves for 2 weeks which many other IBs do in their Spring Weeks. Nomura really pushed us to network ourselves and be a bit more independent.
Everything Else
Yeah I was definitely paid adequately for the work experience.
There were other insight programs running at the same time as ours, and the HR team were very open to letting us attend events that were planned for them. This allowed us to network with the other programs. They also organised a networking drinks between the two university programs which was really nice.
They organised a networking drinks between the two university programs which was really nice as again we could meet other people who were from similar backgrounds to us and as we were on different programs it was interesting to see how the two differed and compare what we had each learned.
As well as the company emails getting forwarded to us which advertised extra clubs the company offered (and people within the company), members of the graduate team also spoke to us about the activities they are involved in outside of work which was nice to hear. They also invited us to these events.
I would definitely recommend this insight because out of all the insights I've attended this was by far the most useful.
