About You
I had a fantastic time at the insight week. We were taught comprehensively about the industry, had plenty of opportunities to network with senior members of the company and all the sessions were highly engaging with lots of active participation and practise tasks. I particularly enjoyed the trading simulation exercise.
I felt incredibly valued. We were welcomed by all the employees we interacted with, from analysts giving us a tour of the trading floor who themselves had completed a spring week, to VPs and managing directors who generously gave up their time to answer our questions and attended a networking lunch with us.
There was a lot of guidance on basics of finance which was ideal for those of us who have had very little exposure. This was achieved both through lecture-style and seminar-style teaching as well as hands-on learning. In addition, there were personal development and presentation skills sessions to help with other aspects of business life.
I am very keen on entering the financial industry following the spring week, and will certainly be referring to the handbooks and information we were given throughout the week in future research! Moreover, the personal development skills and networking skills are sure to come in useful in any degree studies as well as future employment.
The Company
Very well. We were given a detailed timetable on the first morning which was followed perfectly, and we were always kept informed of where we were expected to be at what time. All the exercises were group-based and the groups changed on a daily basis which was also very well organised to ensure we could all meet each other.
Fantastic. Everyone was so enthusiastic and excited to be there and be a part of the spring week, and this was reflected in the number of insightful questions asked and comments made at the end of each session. We were encouraged to network with one another as much as possible, and on the first day there was an icebreaker in the morning as well as a social event that evening with the other spring week groups.
A significant amount of time and resources was invested into our development, from networking skills to presentation skills. It very much felt like this was as valued by the company as the formal finance teaching which was nice. We were also given many opportunities to network with seniors and encouraged to do so.
We were given tours of trading floors, and had Q&A sessions with analysts in a variety of roles in addition to HR, technology and other roles within the business. This gave a broad insight into what different jobs might be like in different divisions, and all employees were very helpful and more than happy to answer any 'silly' questions!
We learnt a lot about the business research groups, philanthropy, JPM mission, and volunteering opportunities, from the first day to the last. I really appreciated this focus on the possibilities of giving back to the community and how the JP culture is structured. We were also given compliance seminars and it was explained to us how the company values are structured around 4 core ideas.
Really helpful - there were people representing every aspect of the business and we were given presentations about multiple different areas we might wish to apply for. In addition, at the networking events there were always a wide variety of roles represented. We also had the chance to attend a careers fair in which there were stands and representatives to ask questions to about every business area.
Everything Else
Accommodation in Deptford Bridge and travel to/from London was covered by JPM, in addition to travel from the accommodation hotel to the office. This was arranged through a travel agency who does it all for you, so JPM pays directly and you don't have to claim/wait for reimbursement which was nice to not have to worry about. The accommodation provided was fantastic.
Every day there was at least one networking events, with different people from different divisions, so there was plenty of time to practise this skill in both formal settings such as a senior networking lunch to more informal sessions such as receiving trading floor tours from recent graduates and being able to ask them anything at all.
We were given lovely food and drinks at all the networking and social event opportunities, and it was greatly encouraged to make use of the networking training we had been given to make the most of these. The social event on the first day was held at a beautiful venue and provided us all with a nice chance to get to know one another.
We were told a lot about volunteering opportunities and it was explained to us how to get involved, as well as showcasing a few examples of the types of activities that current employees partake in or have been involved in before. This was presented to us both formally via presentations and informally, as virtually every person I spoke to at networking events raved about the activities available outside of their working day.
Absolutely - in fact I already have! The days were quite long and quite intense, but the quantity of information I learnt and the ways in which it was delivered was such a fantastic opportunity. In addition, helpful advice about future careers and applying to their summer internship program was provided.
