About You
I very much enjoyed this insight programme. It was rather long (3 days) and sometimes the talks went on for a bit too long but it was genuinely enjoyable for a few reasons. The food we received was very good, everything was paid for and we were able to claim back everything. the speakers and activities were really interesting and enjoyable and i met so many wonderful people.
I felt very valued due to the personal feel of the firm. For example, all of the staff would refer to you by name, even if they didn't know you that well. The speakers also stressed how we should be incredibly proud to get on this scheme and to always be kind. the staff also had a good personal relationship with the trainees etc, which made me feel that I too can be valued in the future.
I received quite a lot of support and guidance, and if I had any questions, I was able to talk to the staff and my colleagues. They were very helpful. The insight provided guidance into the next steps for the process and what things I would need to succeed.
Firstly, I received guidance about my CV and how I can improve it, I also received a lot of information about all of the schemes available and what deadlines they were etc. I developed skills in presenting, pitching and networking, which are crucial for my role and beyond. I also improved on my communication skills.
The Company
Very well structured. Each day we received a step by step plan and schedule for the day, wit times allocated to each session and workshop. We were also given lots of information about the accommodation we were staying in for example. Generally the sessions stayed on track and we did not run behind schedule.
very very friendly. Professional but not too intimidating ie) we had music playing during breaks and we did icebreakers and other fun activities. It wasn't too difficult to find people to network/hang out with during the breaks either. In general it was fun, but also professional in the way that the partners and managers spoke to us, but also that we felt we could ask them anything.
As I only attended am insight programme, I did not really feel invested in. However I was told that attending this insight scheme would actually fast track me onto the the vacation scheme- so in this regard I felt that the company was investing in me as they want to make sure I consider them.
Very much so. By speaking to trainees, interns, partners and managers, I was able to gain an insight into the profession as a whole and more importantly the firm as a whole. I learnt about typical working hours, how to maintain a good work life balance and much much more.
This insight really helped me understand the company culture. I feel that being in the firm and talking to the staff etc meant that I could appreciate the culture and experience it first hand for myself. Especially as I was able to freely talk to the staff myself, as if I already worked there.
It was fairly useful, especially by speaking to the managers and partners. Also speaking to the trainees who were actively spending time in each role was very useful to get an insight into the different practice groups and sectors I could go into in the future. However, we did not get enough time to go into detail about these practice groups.
Everything Else
I was reimbursed for my train travel down to London, both there and back, as well as for my dinner during the insight programme. My hotel was also paid for by the company, which meant I did not have to pay for anything myself.
There was a networking lunch, which was okay but because we were very hungry, most of us just ate food rather than getting time to network. There was also a speed networking event but we only got about 2 minutes per trainee so we did not get very long to speak to them.
there wasn't many networking opportunities as they were usually during lunch times are during busy times. In terms of social events. It was nice to be able to talk to fellow colleagues, but there wasn't much opportunity to network together as the days were rather long and tiring.
I found out about many pro bono activities that trainees can get involved in and this was very interesting and exciting to me. I also found out about secondments, international trips and overseas wok experiences. I also found out about other work experiences with big clients which was also interesting
I would definitely recommend this insight scheme to a friend just because of how much I learnt and how much fun I had. It was very well organised and I appreciate that they paid for everything as I know many people would be deterred from an event like this if it wasn't paid for. I also got to meet some amazing people, develop skills and expend my network.
