The Role
I had a great time on my placement. The atmousphere at IBM is dynamic and engaging, and I was constantly challenged in my role. The office is very friendly and I felt like I was part of the team from day 1. I would highly recommend a placement with IBM.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. The work I was doing was clearly vital to the workings of the team, and without me their jobs would be much harder and more stressful. I would regularly sort out issues for them which they were extremely grateful for which they showed in the positive feedback they gave me.
I felt like I had a lot of support while at IBM. My manager often worked remotely or on a client site, so I did not see him very often but we were in regular contact and he always kept updated with what I was doing. I also had an 'Early Professionals Manager' who looked after my wellbeing while I was there so I had a lot of support.
Most of the time I was busy. There were a few times where my work would experience a bit of a lull, but generally I was satisfied with the workload. My role was somewhat periodised with different tasks needing to be completed on a monthly basis, so these times were usually the busiest.
I was given a lot of responsibility. I was managing a lot of the back office project management tasks which were vital to each project, such as invoicing and monthly forecasting. The importance of these tasks made me feel like I had a lot of responsibility while in my role.
The skills I have learnt will help with university work, for example time management skills, planning and organising, and prioritisation. These skills will also help after university when I start work. I have also gained invaluable experience in the workplace which many graduates may not have, making me stand out.
The Company
The atmousphere was very friendly. I was made to feel like part of the team straight away and even people not in my team were very friendly. The atmousphere was dynamic and exciting, but also relaxed and not too serious which I think is a positive. This made the experience very enjoyable and I always looked forward to coming into work.
It was very well organised. There was a lot of structure and a great support network in place. There are a lot of interns at IBM and they managed to organise it well so that although we were all in different roles, we also felt like part of the same team.
The initial induction was not particularly in depth, but as we were all doing different roles, this was to be expected. During the placement there were plenty of opportunities for personal development. There are online courses you can take in your own time which are encouraged, and you're also encouraged to find areas of interest and explore them freely.

The graduate scheme is very appealing to me. It seems fairly broad which I think is a good thing, especially for me as I am not set on which area of the business I would like to go into, so variety is key for me in exploring different avenues of the business,.
The Culture
Yes. There are loads of placement students so we quickly got to know each other and I formed a friendship group I will keep for many years to come. Everyone is very friendly and this made the job more enjoyable. There were a few social events but we did have to organise these ourselves
Expensive. I was in london so naturally this cost a lot. I rented a flat in london close to work which was pretty expensive, and I wouldn't say the salary is very good considering the importance of the work I was doing. The salary is slightly more for those working in london, but this still was not very much and made living in london difficult.
Nightlife in london was very good, but expensive. I tended to stick to pubs and bars as clubs are SO expensive. Of course it is great fun though and there is plenty on offer for whatever takes your fancy. Just be prepared to spend a lot if you're going out!
There were a few things on offer in terms of sport, like a football team, but I don't think this was advertised very well as I only heard about it through another intern. I don't know if there are other sports or clubs offered - again, not advertised to interns at all if it exists.
