    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Great work environment, very relaxed, friendly team and flexible working hours. Could easily work remotely is wanted too. However the work was simple, not challenging enough and not alot of room for growth and expansion. Okay for a placement job as it was a great taster of the real working life however a limited internal role which was just mainly admin.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Had a great team, got on very well with all of them. I valued each and everyone of them and this was reciprocated. They were always happy to help me out and give me every opportunity to grow and develop. They were also happy to share there experience and knowledge to give me guidance on my future career.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Was given as much guidance and support that was needed. Sometime none - yet this is a learning curve and it is important to figure things out by yourself. However I ask for it, it was always given. My manager became my coach and supported me through any difficulties or challenges that arose.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I do feel like my role was a monitory however my job role didn't take up alot of capacity. I was told to work at home alot as no one was in the office when there wasn't much to do. However a bonus to this was I was able to fill up my time with learning/ development such as badges and shadowing.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I did have responsibility however it was shared with anohter intern who essential did the same role as me. As a pair we had a lot of responsibility however nothing really on my own. Okay for a placement year and support and help is nice however I would of like to taken things on by myself.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learnt more relevant work life skills in my placement year then the two previous years at uni complained. IBM has a huge learning platform which can be accessed by any IBMers. I took full advantage of this. IBM encourages you to do at least 40 hours a year of training and development and you can even can qualifications.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Fun and relaxed. Are team had banter yet everyone knew when we had to be serious. It was a calm environment and I felt I could safely and freely express any concerns I had. However dull at times as alot of the team worked at home so sometimes it was just me in the office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Once attending the assessment center it became organised. I applied to the company in December however didn't here any response until February. It took as long as till April to get an Assessment center, this was quite stressful as by this time I had to risk not excepting other offers in the hope of getting this one. Luckily the risk paid off and once attending the AC the next interview then hire/ induction was very well organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As an intern you are allowed access to all the learning and development tools on the internal database. However this is most likely the limit of any training and development. I would of prefer I they could of given me the opportunity to gain some external qualification - I did ask if I was able to gain some accounting training however I was only offered the online tools already there. No investment specifically to interns was given.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    International Travel

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • A great company to work for. Would be happy to go back and join the consulting graduate programme . However the only limitation for me is that I would like to develop and get either my CIMA or ACA. I don't think this is an option at IBM - looking more at the big four.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Good social scene however self organised. We had an intern Christmas party however it was self organised and paid by us. It would of been nice for IBM to have organised/ paid for at least one social/ networking social throughout the placement year. However with that being said it is still very possible to have a great social life with the other interns.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Okay prices however the wage at IBM wasn't very generous in comparison to other internships - I was able to live and have good social life throughout my placement year however didn't manage to save anything which I would of like to have done. A salary of £1000 a month when rent is average of £500 + bills isnt much to go off. lucky that the nights out were cheap!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Not great in the local town however the nearest city has a great nightlife. Only a £40 taxi so still in reach. Student central thus had many great and cheap nights out. However the local town only had a few pubs and no clubs thud forced to go further a field.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • For males there was a football league you could join. However for girls I didnt hear of anything that was going on. The equivalent of a netball team would of been nice and I would of got involved in that. I believed there aren't many activities outside of work to get involved in and if there were they weren't very well advertised.
