The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my work placement. It gave me lots of responsibility but it was also very rewarding. IBM have lots of interns so working alongside people who are at the same career stage as you is very inspiring and motivated me to continue working hard consistently. This meant there was also a great community of interns to hang out with which made working very fun!
Working alongside senior staff is very inspiring. I got to work with colleagues in a range of roles and they were all very supportive and respectful. No one makes you feel less important because you're less qualified/ experienced than them - instead they all try to help you and give you opportunities.
My manager was great! She was very clear about what was expected of me and when I found things difficult she would always take a step back with me and help me evaluate the situation so we could come up with a solution. I also had an EPM who was great and available to talk to as and when I'd need.
Super busy - but in a good way! I barely ever had a slow day it was always all hands on deck and full of productivity because even when my tasks were finished or slowing down there was giveback or my colleagues work to help or get stuck into. Luckily, I was able to manage my tasks so that I could take on and get done as much as I felt I comfortably could!
I was given a good amount of responsibility. Sometimes it was handed to me whilst other times I would ask, for example I told my manager I was happy to lead certain tasks which she then let me and I was then able to build on it. If you prove yourself or show you're deserving then you will get decent amount of responsibility.
I have tested lots of different way of working and tracking my tasks and have finally discovered my best working method which I can implement when planning revision and exams for Uni. I am also more efficiently getting tasks and I have adopted a more results driven way of working so I know I'll be more on the ball when I'm back to finish my degree!
The Company
When working in the office there was a very corporate atmosphere. Lots of consultants working and talking to clients it was a nice environment to get work done, barely any distractions but not silent or boring like a library! The canteen and social areas were always full of energy and there was lots to do to keep you entertained and your mind off work!
The organisation was amazing. My two day induction was well structured, I met my manager on day one and from there I was left to get on with my role. I had regular reviews which were well organised and my manager also put regular catch ups in for us to to see how I was getting on.
I had a handover from the previous intern but no formal training otherwise. There are always badges available for you to do online and if you highlight that you need help in something then they will spend time to help you or find someone who can help. The company doesn't really formally train you but maybe it depends on your role.
Financial Bonus
Working from home
I would definitely apply back to the graduate scheme. I think they treat early professionals well and that there are lots of opportunities for them to try different things and be exposed to different areas of the business. I think it would be interesting to see how responsibility levels and training changes from intern to graduate level.
The Culture
There are lots of social things to get up to, there are parties and events on weekends or after work so if you're interested in that you can get involved. Placement students/ colleagues tend to plan their own events but there are some planned by the business, you just have to find out.
As I was based in London the cost of living was very expensive as rent and travel from work to home was also costly. Socialising was expensive in the area I worked as it was central London but not so bad in the area I lived as that was more residential.
It was great because it was very central and so it was always diverse and full of energy however it could be very expensive due to the location and the ease of access because tubes and food is always close by. Overall it was great but not for a regular thing!
There are lots from a range of sporty activities to more casual ones. If you look for them you will find them. Due to the area it is located in there are a range of things people can get involved in. If you find something you're interested in you'll be able to find it nearby!
