The Role
The decision to take a year out in industry has proved to be forever fruitful and advantageous to my personal well-being, ideas and thirst for learning. The new exposure I have had to different working circumstances has been rewarding and further encouraged reflective growth within me. I have also met some great people and the chance to earn and move to a new city on my own has been the best.
I have established good relationships with my team and wider circles. Forming both friendships and professional companionships which have stood me in good stead for the future.
People want the best for you and for you to experience the great things this company has to offer. Show willingness and an eager sense of inquisitiveness and you'll go far.
The day to day role could sometime be cumbersome; fluctuating in levels of assigned content. There are so many things to get involved with so you should never be bored, always things to do!
It's nice once you get to grips with things that people start asking you the questions and you're working with teams that are older than you and somehow it doesn't feel intimidating.
It has provided me with another level confidence and taught me about presentation and collaborative skills, all of which I can take back to Uni and demonstrate there in group and personal assignments. IBM has really helped me to develop 'new collar' skills, which I deem to be vitally important to the development of my personal success. Additionally aspects of my course have cropped up in conversations / learning opportunities - all of which helps to paint the bigger picture of the business world and where one might want to slot in to!
The Company
Lively; I sat with a young team which ranged from 20-27 who were always involved with exciting new tech related projects. Sometimes quiet but on the whole always someone about.
Great, we have regular check-ins to discuss progress and feelings throughout the year. There were career related days put on which were helpful and refreshing somewhat. It would have been better to get a true and proper handover however coped without one.
I attended training which provided me with new thinking skills; targeting how to address problems and the journey to solutions differently. There is masses of ongoing learning readily available, it's great. Also I learned some technical languages on an intensive course which was great!

They seem interesting and a great way to direct your own career; with the opportunity the jump between projects if you try hard enough. The criteria required to progress upwards is also laid out and I feel like people will help you achieve this.
The Culture
So good, such a great cohort of interns as there were approx 130 in my base location alone. I really enjoyed the working life regime and had immense fun and would do it all over again - therefore excited for post-grad life!
Expensive! I lived and worked in London, therefore I noticed the cost increase massively.
Good fun however we would tend to have post-work drinks and go home, rather than nights out - however they did happen and it was great to explore London.
I believe some of the boys joined the company football team so there are social activities available. Some business lines / teams would organise socials for their employees. Living in London though, there are endless things to see & do.
