    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Fantastic placement working within Finance at IBM. Allowed me to develop an excellent understanding of business operations and the role of finance within a multinational technology company. Worked alongside colleagues from all over the world every day which was a brilliant eye opening experience into the world of business. Would recommend applying here.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From the moment I arrived I felt like an integral component to my team. I was trusted with high importance tasks in which made me feel under pressure. This was exciting as the role wasn't just a "walk in the park". It was challenging and as a result extremely rewarding.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager has developed my skills enormously over this year. Through plenty of one to one coaching my leadership and problem solving skills have accelerated my abilities. As a result my confidence has improved greatly and i understand how best to handle myself in various situations. Including dealing with Executives.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Had its moments, very often I was incredibly busy (which i enjoy) and rarely i had little to do. Definitely at times frustrated by workload but when the results go well it feels more rewarding. Hope to be as busy as this in future work as it keeps you on your toes and develops you further.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot! Very busy, handled financial reviews all by myself with senior executives. Extremely rewarding being trusted with this, and as the year has gone on watching my skills develop in these situations. Nervous at first but happy that I was asked to do work like this and trusted with the opportunity.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Degree studies didn't help me that much as learning was not theoretical. Learnt how to handle myself in a competitive business environment that will help me in my future work and opportunities. Skills i developed were more workplace skills than theoretical book learning skills. But for the future it has prepared me greatly.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very pleasant atmosphere at work. Often got heated during busy periods but still remained exciting and fun. During busy times people bring in food to share and it is a really nice touch to a busy day. I have thoroughly enjoyed the work place environment whilst on my placement year.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Fantastic. I had two managers who looked after my progress. My Early Professional Manager who looked after my progress throughout the year through quarterly reviews. My task manager who managed me on a day to day. Both managers interlocked and review your work from two points of view. Its great!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. Intern to Graduate opportunity. IBM offers various roles including consulting which i am very attracted to! It is competitive but I think I stand a good chance of being accepted back into IBM for after I finish my university studies. Roles mainly in london but this is great for me.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Excellent. Of my intake there were about thirty other interns. This made moving down here easy as you had people to house share with. Thoroughly have enjoyed meeting these people who I am sure I will stay friends with after we head back to university. I have had a lot of fun living down here in Portsmouth for a year.
