About You
It was enjoyable overall with a busy schedule and many opportunities to speak to people in different lines of business. Q&A sessions were particularly enjoyable, as were the several interactive sessions we had where we were able to have hands on experience working with data and with our peers in a supportive environment.
The current employees of the firm were very welcoming and enthusiastic, and I felt valued in that they were all keen to take time out of their extremely busy schedules to speak to us individually and answer any questions we had for them. It was difficult to feel valued amongst the intern cohort as it's quite a competitive environment.
There were many networking opportunities with little guidance on how to navigate a professional networking event. Eventually we got the hang of it but that was through our own developing experience of the networking dynamic. Otherwise there was a lot of guidance provided in terms of the information given to us in different forms about different lines of business.
I am not expecting the skills I developed to assist me with my degree studies as I am studying for a discipline which does not involve finance. However, I do expect that the skills of networking and team collaboration which we developed throughout the various lunches and interactive activities will assist me in my future career.
The Company
The insight week was very well structured with a clear timetable given to us at the start of the week detailing the activities for each day and each day was packed with useful sessions. Given that the purpose of the week was to give a firmwide overview, the structure of dedicating one day to each main line of business was very effective.
The overall atmosphere was quite tense and competitive at the start, but given that there was no assessment centre and no formal conversion to an internship at the end of the week there was limited competition amongst interns so we were eventually able to relax and socialise with other interns over the course of the week.
We had sessions ran by external speakers (Seth Wainwright and Fitch Learning) which were invaluable for our own personal training and development. The skills developed ranged from interview skills and presentation skills to personal self awareness. I learnt a lot about my own skill set and took away a variety of pointers to help me develop these skills going forward.
We did not gain a practical understanding of what it would be like to have a full time role with JP Morgan because we did not have any work shadowing opportunities, so could not really experience what it would be like to work on the desks. However, we had plenty of business line talks and q&a sessions with employees so had all of our questions about full time roles answered.
It was useful for getting a broad view of the company culture, but culture is something that you can only gain a limited understanding of when only being there for a week.
I already knew I wanted to pursue a career in finance but the content of the week helped me massively to narrow it down to knowing which line of business I would now like to pursue. It gave me information about different roles in the firm so I now know which to apply for for the summer internship programme
Everything Else
We were given a travelcard at the start of the week so had no travel expenses, and accommodation was provided for those of us who lived outside of the M25. We were not paid, but even so the accommodation was more than adequate with many facilities including a gym and a laundromat.
Yes there were many great networking opportunities with people in all lines of business, ranging from analysts and associates to managing directors. This variety was a stand out point of the internship for me as it was useful to compare the views of people with 10+ years of experience with JPM with those of new employees.
The networking opportunities were great as previously mentioned, and the best bit from my perspective was being able to speak to analysts who had done the spring and summer programmes to understand their career paths. There was also a social event on the first day where the spring interns were all able to network with each other which was good fun.
We had a session on the first day about philanthropy and corporate responsibility where we learnt about different groups that employees could join for networking and support amongst their own gender, ethnic and sexual orientation groups, as well as the charitable pursuits that they can join and set up upon being employed.
