About You
I really enjoyed the insight week at J.P.Morgan - it provided me with a deep insight into how investment banks operate and how they work with other financial institutions. This was done with presentations that were interactive, in which asking questions was encouraged which made the insight week even more educational and enjoyable.
I felt very valued during my time at J.P.Morgan as I, along with everyone else on the spring week, were told that getting onto the spring week programme is a huge success due to it being a very competitive programme to get onto. Staff at J.P.Morgan made me feel proud of myself because of how difficult it was to get onto the programme. The culture at J.P.Morgan was expressed to me and it made me feel very welcomed- thus it is a company that I would love to work at in the future.
I received a huge amount of guidance during the insight week- this included a presentation on the application process for summer internship programme which was extremely helpful. It was made clear that if anyone has any learning difficulties or disabilities, they could provide additional help and support- particularly with a test we have to undertake for the summer internship application. I also received support by the programme bringing me up to speed with a good base of financial knowledge because I currently study a non-financial degree.
The skills learnt at the programme will definitely help me with my degree studies as the programme included learning to present in front of an audience- this will be extremely useful as this is a skill that I will need to use in my degree studies, and also later on in life (e.g. in a workplace presenting to clients or co-workers). I also got a good insight into the different divisions in a general investment bank, so now that I know what each division generally does, it will help me decide which division I would like to work in in the future.
The Company
The insight week was extremely well structure- there was not a single moment that I felt was wasted. There was a very clear timetable, which everyone on the programme was provided with, in which I knew exactly what events were going to take place each day. Even lunch times were well structured as we had the opportunity to have lunch with workers at J.P.Morgan and network with them.
The atmosphere at my insight was great- I felt as if everyone at J.P.Morgan wanted to provide us with as much information and help as possible- questions were encouraged and every presentation had speakers that were enthusiastic and it could be seen that they actually wanted to take time out of their day to speak to the students on the insight programme. They really helped us decide which division we would like to work at in an investment bank like J.P.Morgan.
J.P.Morgan provided us with sessions with training staff that provided us (students from non-financial degree backgrounds) with a good base knowledge of the financial sector- after the programme, I felt as if I was no longer at a disadvantage coming from a non-finance background and applying for a finance related job because I now have a good understanding of the financial knowledge needed for such jobs. Even after the programme, students will be provided with more online sessions to teach us more! Thus, J.P.Morgan has invested a lot into the students on the programme, providing us with sessions held by training staff, notes booklets, and even online sessions! Also, many networking sessions were held in which staff took time out of their busy schedules to meet students on the insight week and provide us with amazing advice.
The insight week significantly helped me to understand what it would be like to have a full time role at J.P.Morgan as there were many presentations held by staff, in which they explained their roles, gave examples of what they did, and answered any questions we had. Additionally, I got to personally speak to these workers in networking events so had the opportunity to ask even more questions about their roles at J.P.Morgan.
The insight week helped me understand the culture at J.P.Morgan as I had a presentation giving an overview of what J.P.Morgan's values and aims were- this really helped me see that J.P.Morgan was a fantastic place to work at. Team work and integrity were just some of the values J.P.Morgan's culture focuses on which I find to be very appealing so would love to work at such a company!
I came into the programme with a small amount of knowledge on the finance industry but left with a great overview of the different roles and divisions in the sector- it left me with a great vision of which division I would like to work in for the future due to the many presentations from workers giving deep insights into their roles at J.P.Morgan.
Everything Else
My travel was all paid for (I was provided with a transport card to use for the whole programme duration) and I was provided with an amazing room at a hotel because I lived far away from J.P.Morgan. All food was provided at J.P.Morgan so I didn't have to spend anything throughout the insight week
There were a huge amount of networking events- most of the lunchtimes were networking events where I had food provided and got to eat with workers or other students of the programme. The networking events had many staff that we could talk to. There was also an event in which staff were in groups categorised by their divisions, so I had the opportunity to ask questions to staff working in specific divisions.
The social events were great- we were in outside with other students from other programmes and got to meet and speak to each other- it was a great event as it got students on the programmes to feel comfortable with each other. Food and drinks were provided. The networking events with staff at J.P.Morgan were also great as it gave me the opportunity to ask questions and get a better insight into what its like working at J.P.Morgan.
I was told what activities employees could get involved with during a presentation- this includes joining sports societies and volunteering. During one of the networking events, I could even see employees playing table tennis. I was also told that certain divisions hold trips to many places, for example a ski trip was one of the trips that employees got to go on.
I would definitely recommend this insight week to any friend because it provides a great insight into what its like working in the financial sector, but also what its like working at J.P.Morgan. I would also recommend it because it taught me so much about finance and made it clear to me that I would like to work in the finance sector.
