About You
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience as it gave me a greater insight into what it was like to work at J.P Morgan, especially with their mobility prospects. On top of this, I gained enough insight to decide which division I would like to apply to for the Summer Programme next summer.
The fact that even Managing Directors took their time to speak to us interns during the networking sessions showed the extent to which J.P Morgan cares about showing the value of prospective employees. We were invited to ask as many questions as possible, and some employees even gave us their email.
The entire programme was well organised and structured so we always knew where to be at what time, thanks to the itinerary we were given at the beginning of the week. We were given several opportunities to ask as many questions as possible so if we were ever caught up on a definition, we could ask the speakers if we wanted to.
The programme was mainly talk based which means that we learnt a lot about what each division did and what it was like to work there which is extremely useful but not necessarily linked to my Economics degree but it will be extremely useful for applying to Summer Internships where I will be able to talk about this programme and how it has shaped what I want to do.
The Company
The programme was well structured with several breaks and we were also given an itinerary so we knew what was going to happen a each point. It was so well organised that there was food provided at breakfast and throughout the day, and we rarely went overtime during the course of the day.
The atmosphere was very engaging as you could talk with like-minded individuals who were just as keen to learn as you. J.P Morgan made it very clear that is was ok to ask as many questions as possible so the atmosphere was never competitive or pressured, but simply based around learning.
They first of all reimbursed my travel and accommodation which shows already a form of investment, as well as the fact that they provided us with lunch, breakfast and even dinner sometimes. All this felt like an investment to retain interns and it was greatly appreciated. The fact that MDs and other employees took their time to speak to us also shows the level of investment given to make us learn even more.
The programme gave me a good idea of what it would be like to work in the bank sine we had several networking opportunities to speak to employees and ask them about their job and why they stayed with J.P Morgan. With several talks, we were also able to ask more questions then.
Speaking to the employees during networking sessions gave a good indication of what the workers there were like: very helpful and kind. Through their character, the culture of the company was being projected as it showed that the company was dedicated to helping employees learning more even if it means spending extra time.
The content was extremely insightful because we got talks from all the divisions so we got insight into what each division did and the skill sets that each division required. It allowed me to see where my skill sets best fit in the bank, especially during the networking dinner where we able to speak to individual teams.
Everything Else
I was not paid however the company gave me an excellent hotel room that was right next to a DLR station. They also gave me a travel card which allowed me to commute every day for free, Also, they paid for my train tickets back home. Breakfast and lunch were given every day.
There were several networking opportunities from all positions, including the networking afternoon tea where people from all divisions were present and available to speak to. We also got to speak to prospective summer interns which was really useful as they gave me good advice for applying for the summer programme next year.
The social events were well organised and often there was food present. There was a session for networking most days where we were talking to different people in different division each day so we could gain a broad insight into several different teams. The people there were really helpful and keen to answer out questions.
We learnt on the first day that there were several different societies you could take part in and that they were really useful for networking. Examples include the analyst and associate society where you can connect with employees in the similar boat as you and where you can form connections early on in your career.
I would recommend this insight to someone else because it was extremely helpful as learnt a lot about what J.P Morgan does as a bank and how its culture differs from other banks. Moreover, it gives you the perfect springboard for when you apply to the summer internship programme next summer.
