About You
I thoroughly enjoyed the insight week. It included a variety of sessions ranging from industry overviews to trade simulations. It was well-balanced in the sense that it was not just presentations we had to sit through, but we got involved in interactive sessions on multiple days and a very enjoyable end to the week which was the trade simulation.
I felt very valued throughout the week. From the moment we started, everyone was very nice and we were let known on the competitiveness of the programme. In addition to this, from the sessions that were organised, it was clear they valued us greatly because it was not just industry overviews and group tasks but also soft skills training (presentation) which was very helpful. The HR representatives were always with us and very friendly along with all the employees I met from the networking events.
I received a lot of support throughout the week with any questions I had from [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] They were very helpful and always smiling! Even during the interactive events, the presenters would be more than happy to help if we were stuck on something and needed little hints. Also, many employees were happy to meet up after the Spring Week hours so I could follow-up from our conversations and gain further insight from them.
Definitely, the skills I learned and developed will assist me throughout my life. The presentation skills session was very well executed and I was actively engaged throughout the 2 hours. It was of massive help as I learned things I would normally not place great emphasis on. It really changed the way I perceive delivering presentations for the better.
The Company
It was very well structured which allowed for a variety of sessions ranging from industry overviews to networking events to trading simulations. It is hard to believe how much I learned and did in just a week! The breaks were very well embedded into the agenda and all in all, everything was seamless. In fact, during one presentation, one of the employees was running late due to transport issues but another employee covered up quickly and was insightful.
The atmosphere was great. It was a very friendly yet professional atmosphere. Everyone wanted to learn and was supportive of each other. I think the opening social evening was great and allowed us to get to know each other and make new friends from all around the world! I don't think there was one lunch where I would be eating by myself and not talking with someone I hadn't spoken to before!
The company invested to a large extent. All the sessions were carefully tailored to ensure that we not only learnt more about the many divisions but also enhanced our existing skillset. They had external trainers coming in to teach us about soft skills such as presentation skills which was really valuable as I learnt things I would not normally have thought of or placed any importance on. Not only was it valuable, but it was also highly entertaining and engaging.
The insight had many presentations covering different divisions of the bank. Each presentation has hosts that worked in the respective divisions and would outline daily tasks and give us a further insight into the role. What I liked most was that they were actively trying to leave enough time for questions which allowed us to ask more personalised questions and learn exactly what we wanted to know about their experiences etc.
I learnt a lot about the company culture throughout the week. Especially through the networking events. I can't stress enough how valuable these events were. The employees were MORE than happy to take even more time out and meet later for any further questions we had. They all emphasised the collectiveness and friendliness that kept them at J.P. In addition to this, I really liked that they also included the opportunity to network with senior representatives as that allowed me to get an insight as to how J.P's culture differentiated to the other companies they may have worked for. This was really enlightening.
I can safely say that I have left the Spring Week knowing which division I'll be applying to. The combination of networking and presentations provided so much information that it allowed me to decide which best suited my skillset and interests. The presentations were packed with a lot of information on daily roles but via networking, I was able to ask more questions about their likes, dislikes etc and it really did help me decide which division to pick.
Everything Else
I did not claim any expenses since I live close to Canary Wharf.
As mentioned earlier, there were many and varied opportunities to network.
As mentioned before, they were amazing and very varied. From informal drinks to formal networking fair, it really did help me make many contacts. The very first day was an evening social were the students got the chance to get to know each other better. I really enjoyed this and thought it was very beneficial. I am still in contact with some today!
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend especially if they do not know which division for certain they want to go into. There are so many roles available that you may not have considered before, but by hearing about it from the insight, it may be something that you end up choosing. It is really worth it as it gives you so much information about the divisions and the culture at J.P. that you leave knowing if it is a career you want to pursue or if its something that's not for you. Also, the networking opportunities are invaluable. Being able to talk with and gain advice from those that have excelled is unparalleled as some may have had similar experiences or career paths so it definitely helps keeping in contact and to ask questions. They genuinely want to help!
