The Role
Found the activities I undertook while on the Finance placement scheme at IBM North Harbour very beneficial. The work was varied and there is always a new project or task that needed extra hands on. This engaging work along with the extra GiveBack opportunities, education and shadowing opportunities made this a great placement.
At IBM, I have always felt valued and appreciated by my colleagues and superiors. Even as an intern on a work placement, you are valued and treated as a normal, full-time member of the team - you are not relegated to making coffee or performing the menial task as you could be in some companies. IBM has a culture of providing feedback through its "ACE Feedback Tool' which allows other employees to recognize your positive contributions to the company.
IB operates a "Matrix Management System", where you are managed by your task manager and EPM (Early Professional Manager). My task manager provided me with a strong bedrock of support throughout my placement, ranging from advice regarding analytical problems and support with improving my technical skills and also provided friendly support during tough times during the placement. My interactions with my EPM were of a lesser amount, but equally as useful and constructive.
At IBM, the work required was consistent but not overwhelming. As there was always another task to complete, there was always something extra that could be done for the business. However, the workload was not pressurizing and it felt like IBM had a good balance between the working world and having free time to relax.
During my placement, I was given the responsibility of multiple tasks which would have affected business results if they were not processed correctly. These responsibilities ranged from tracking and billing for half a million dollars worth of projects and providing financials and solutions to tasks that would affect parts of the business process in large ways.
I feel that the skills I have developed on this placement will be incredibly valuable in my final year of studying and in the working world beyond. At IBM, they place the growth of their employee at the forefront of their vision - constantly educating us and providing education on new processes and technologies to give their employees the edge in the competitive world.
