The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement. It has shown me a great deal of different and exciting opportunities. I have learnt many new skills including presentation skills and improved my people skills and business rationale. My contract have given me lots of opportunities to explore different areas of the business to find where I would best be suited in the future. The staff and managers are very supportive and share my drive and enthusiam.
I feel very valued by my colleagues- I am constantly getting involved in projects and supporting other members of staff. Sometimes it has been difficult to make breakthroughs, but that comes with the nature of the business. Exactly as the rating says- I instantly felt like I was part of the family at my depot.
To start with my manager was not that supportive- I felt under alot of pressure and I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere. Since Christmas I got a new line manager and she has been fantastically supportive and given me some great guidance.
I am busy most days. To start with, it felt super busy but I didn't feel like I was achieving much. Now I'm busy every day doing a variety of tasks. Alot of what I do though, has happened because I am proactive. I search for work and make sure I always have plenty to do. As with any job, you do have quiet times too.
I have a lot of responsibility. I attend senior management meetings with our union as well as the daily meetings. I am responsible for employee opinion feedback sessions, course facilitation and internal communications. I also do events planning.
I have become a much more rounded professional. I have had lots of training in facilitation and am about to do a 3 day 21st century managers course. I am going to Germany (Bonn) to DHL headquarters for a week of work experience- this is a part of my degree specification. I had to organise this myself, however the company are supporting me in this. My workplace have also offered me my job on a part-time basis from September. This placement has nurtured and developed lots of skills which are transferable beyond my degree. Hopefully the contacts I have made here will help me to achieve a fulfilling career, hopefully with DHL Supply Chain. I would however have liked to have done more warehouse management (I have been fulfilling a fuctional HR role)
The Company
The atmosphere in my office is great. Everyone is supportive and it is like a family. However, the office is primarily older members of staff so there is little "social life" certainly for me.
It was mostly well organised- assessment centre feedback was quick and thorough. I didn't originally get a placement, but was called in early August to offer me a place. Matt was fantastic in getting things sorted. We have had placement training modules with other placement students, which were well organised and contained useful content.
The company really invested in me CSCM (managers course) CSCS CSCS Facilitator Presenting with Impact Introduction to HR Introduction to Transport Systems and a multitude of other online training courses were available to me on the company training website. I have done alot more than other placement students as I have really put myself out there.

Very appealing The graduate scheme opportunities are extensive. I have also been offered my job part time from September. I fully intend to work for DHL after graduation
The Culture
Yes, the other placement students were sociable when we were together, however we are spread thinly accross England, which makes it difficult to meet up. All the placement students were also a few years younger than me.
Cost of living is ok- not as expensive as London however Bristol is still an expensive city.
Bristol has a really good nightlife. Not that I go out much!! I'm often tired from the working week. There are lots of good pubs though!!!
If you play football, some of our men play on a Thursday evening. People do socialise outside of work There are lots of keen sports people here- cycling, running & football mostly
