    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Working for IBM has been fun. I have learnt a lot and have taken advantage of the resources available to really improve myself. The main thing that I enjoyed was successfully setting up meetings for sellers which would not have been possible without the help of colleagues and the support from managers. In all, 10/10.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • You are valued by the amount of value that you bring. At first I didn't feel too noticed, but as things compounded it soon became known that I can work Excel and research clients. IBM allows you to expand so long as you put the ground work in and values you by what you do, which makes the feeling of being valued all the more special, as it is earned.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My Director has been extremely supportive of my work and has given me several opportunities that have enriched my experience here. He has also guided from a distance, allowing me to make mistakes but gently steering me in the right direction. Nothing but good things to say about my Director.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I managed to automate my core roles within a month of joining IBM. This has allowed me to take on more work in other areas which has been exciting. I have also automated other areas of business reporting to provide accurate data for other departments quickly. I can always do more work though.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have branched out my responsibilities. In IBM, when you show competence in certain areas then you can effectively gain independent responsibility for those areas. The system is set up for interns to gain more roles and responsibilities which has been great. I am now in three departments and represent IBM in client meetings.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The placement had nothing to do with my degree. I am now competent in Excdl and can set up client meetings. My presentation skills have been honed and I feel like a more well rounded person. Although I want to come back to IBM, the placement has also bolstered my CV in case I don't come back.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The area where I worked was a sales floor. It was empty at points but that was good because it meant that the sellers were out selling to clients. There were a group of other interns with me which was good because it was never lonely and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • IBM is a veteran player in the internship game. I had a work manager and an early proffessionals manager to keep me on the straight and narrow. Anything related to contracts and I assume that any issues I could have had would have been handled well and promptly. Nothing bad to say.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • IBM has more online learning resources than you can throw a stick at. I took advantage of the online badge system that allows you to gain qualifications in anything from stats to blockchain to coding, all of which I now have. There are tons of reading opportunities also which is good.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Financial Bonus

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • IBM is a continuously evolving company with fingers in all the major areas of tech, bar social media which some may consider a good thing. It is in the fasted growing industry, so work is always available to those who want to take it a step further. There are many opportunities for me here and I am looking to come back.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. There have been a few parties and events set up to get everyone together. Our early proffessionals managers are also keen to spot anyone who may have been quiet in the first few weeks and gets them involved in subtle and encouraging ways. Nothing bad to say at all.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is very expensive. There were some extra amounts added onto the salary for London based interns which helped.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I don't really do the whole nightlife thing, but I hear that it's great.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I had the time to join a rowing club in the summer which was fun. I am also in a gymnastics club and am keeping fit in the gym. There is a lot of time in the weekend, and if you can get your work done early then you can get home and do what you want to do.
