    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed the spring explore programme. I found it insightful and interesting and the organisers ensured that we met with people from all across the bank's divisions. This helped give us a well-rounded opinion of the bank. The speakers were also sure to tell us how Nomura differs from other European and American banks and why the culture is better at Nomura.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I believe that Nomura treated us with care and made us feel important however if the scheme could have some more similarities with the women’s scheme in terms of length and interaction with the staff I think it could have gone a long way into making us feel as if we are part of the firm for a week.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I believe we received adequate support. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] did a great job ensuring that we knew what we were doing each day and how the scheme will work and what the next stages were. I found this crucial in settling our nerves and ensuring we were always busy and interested.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I do not believe the content learned is directly related to my degree. But going on the spring week has enabled me to be more motivated and passionate about achieving the best grade in my degree so I can become closer to achieving my aims of a career in finance. Some of the information and accounting techniques we learned during the scheme may come in handy at a later date in my degree, career or personal life.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The insight week was well structured and informative, HR ensured that we received a wide range of people across the divisions. The week was well organised and everyone that came to talk to us was informative and punctual. Everyone seemed ready to help and the week seemed to run like clockwork. Not once did I find myself waiting around or bored.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere for the best part was positive and bright. Everyone that came to talk to us had a positive opinion of the firm and it was very insightful to see how the bank's culture differs. The staff also tried their best to reassure us of the companies continued growth and their interest in developing young talent despite what has been said in the news.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Because of limited time, there was only so much Nomura could do in terms of personal development and training. What could be mentioned is that Nomura gave us topics to research, oversight of different divisions which we can then go and expanding our knowledge on. Giving us the edge when it comes to assessment centers and interviews.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • It was only 4 days long so we did not get to experience what a full week would be like. Also, we did not spend that much time shadowing so we did not get a general understanding of offices and how people work. Also, many of the divisions have different working hours. having a schedule that matches the hours of workers would have given more of an insight into what it is like to work full time.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • A lot. Everyone was sure to tell us how the Japanese banking culture differed to European and American banks. They also compared the London office to other banks in London and this gave us an insight into how Nomura is different and if it was something we felt that we would like to be a part of.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Very helpful. I learned so much and even shifted my point of view in terms of careers based purely on the content provided to me by Nomura. I have also found myself more knowledgeable in various departments and divisions which I was not before. I also now know where Nomura specialises in also.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was not paid or reimbursed for my week. I applied knowing the firm was not going to be paying us for the week. We was also provided lunch every day and dinner on Wednesday. But I was not advised if there were any opportunities to be reimbursed for my travel as this was quite costly.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes, there was a chance to network almost every day. HR ensured that representatives of all divisions of all levels visited us to ensure that everyone felt welcomed by the firm. This also helped us gain a wide range of knowledge from people who specialised in particular;ar departments.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The networking opportunities were good, they were an adequate length and I felt I could have a substantial conversation with everyone I wanted to. The lunches also helped with breaking up barriers and making networking less awkward. This also gave us more freedom to express ourselves and speak to the specific sub-divisions we wanted to.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, some staff mentioned some of the activities they get up to outside of work. Many also mentioned how this affected and improved their work. It was great to see that people were able to have a life outside of the workplace and helps break down the stigma of investment banks.

    4/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes, I will highly recommend this scheme to anyone I know has a passion for finance I believe it is necessary and interesting
