The Role
- People were friendly and welcoming - A lot of interns gave a good atmosphere - Projects were assigned to me - Sometimes work could be boring, IT might not be for me - Going to the Disney Cinema to watch the latest movies was really fun and a nice benefit
- My colleagues gave me several opportunities to demonstrate my skills - I was treated as an equal, not neccesarily as an intern most of the time - Manager kept reminding how much value I brought to the team - Had a lot of positive encouragement from certain colleagues - Sometimes felt used by other colleagues but this was kept to a minimum
- The first two months I had no manager/direct supervisor so that was a bit chaotic but I was able to keep myself busy - Once a manager was hired for our team things went a lot better - Have monthly 1 on 1 with my manager with have been amazing in support/guidance - Daily stand ups with the team have been useful if I was unsure about something
- As previously mentioned the first 2-3 months I had very minimal amount of work given to me - As a manager was hired the problem was fixed as she gave me projects and assignements - However I often feel like I have free time and rarely have "busy" days
- I was given a fair amount of responsibility on certain projects - However most of my work has been supporting other colleauges with their projects - A bit more responsibility would be great
- I have developed essential business and people skills such as how to properly manage stakeholder expectations and how to write business emails - I have also improved my excel and powerpoints skills - General skils such as listening, time management and goal setting where also improved naturally throughout the placement - I learned a lot about the different system used at Disney specifically in Revenue Accouting, Contract Managment, Financial Planning and Create business units - Learning these different systems has enabled me to better understand how a large organization such as Disney uses IT to imrpove business proccesses
The Company
- As it is Disney the general atmosphere as a whole was good with a lot of events that I was able to attend - Nevertheless I believe the atmosphere in my team and from what I've heard from other interns to be quite dull - For example our team has not had a proper team outing at all this year
- As I have previously mentioned when I joined Disney I did not have a manager for 2-3 months which made the onboarding quite difficult and informal - However I had the chance to go to a Welcome to Disney day which was a introduction presentation that all new cast members receive and that was very interesing and welcoming
- Investement in learning and development was quite minimal - At the start of the year I was able to go to 2-3 conferences/seminars however these were free and not very useful - I will be able to go to Disney's own learning program in the next coming weeks but these types of programs happen the whole year around and I had to insists to my manager to get on one - No monetary investement was provided for personal training and development unlike placements at Deloitte of which I have a friend who told me that they provide and pay for development throughout the year.
- My manager has mentioned the possibility to come to Disney in the future but not much more - Disney does not offer a graduate scheme - Through contacts and relationship I have built I believe I will have good employement opportunities
The Culture
- Social scene was quite minimal - The only organized social event was the Winter Ball or Movie screenings (if those can be considered social) - Mostly became friends with the interns that were on the same floor - I made a good group of friends however felt it was hard to meet other interns - The interns became quite cliques
- As the placement was in London cost of living was quite high - Socialising due to high cost was somewhat limited - Most of my friends would live at home and away from London so the possibility to do something as a group in the weekened was dimminished because of that
- London big city with lots of nightlife available however as previously mentioned as most of my friends lived at home we did not go out much - The times I went out I really enjoyed it as the clubs in London are a lot better than those found in around my University
- Yes they were many opportunities to Volunteer which I did a few and were quite fun - I painted the walls of a school for an afternoon with some friends - Also helped out with an event called Tech Days at Disney wher companies such as Amazon and Microsoft gave talks and held demo stands - I hope to do a few more before I leave
