About You
The week had a great balance between work and fun, so it was a very enjoyable experience. After each day where we learned a lot about the firm's values, the range of careers available, and participating in coding challenges, we still had the time to explore Bournemouth. I enjoyed the insight to a great extent!
Given that the firm paid for our expenses, that says a lot about how the company treats its employees. I myself felt as a part of the firm as the people I met were very welcoming and kind, the work shadowing experience also made me feel part of the firm.
We had the opportunity to ask everything we wanted to the Campus recruiters and even previous spring interns, and current interns at the firm. Guidance/support was not lacking in any form.
As I came from a chemical engineering background, there was not a lot that I could correlate to my degree studies. However, the experience provided transferrable skills through coding challenges, which enhanced my teamwork and communication skills not only with the new friends that I made but with the J.P. Morgan employees as well.
The Company
We received a booklet on the first day which gave us a timeline of what we would be doing on each day. Prior to that, once I received the Spring Internship offer, the recruiters were always in touch me every month up to the internship week. Each day was well structured with time-off for fun and for meeting the new interns. However, the networking events could be slightly longer.
The general atmosphere was very relaxed, from the work shadowing, I got a very good idea of the work culture as I saw people collaborating with each other in open space. There was general respect amongst everyone I met, the seniors, recruiters, interns, and employees. I absolutely enjoyed this insight and it gave me a great idea of the work culture and community feel.
I feel like the recruiters planned this spring week very well as they incorporated a range of topics and activities for a span of only 5 days. We learned about topics such as: UX/UI design, Hacking, Cybersecurity, Technology for Social Good, Business Resource Groups, Integrity & Honesty, and Corporate Social Responsibility. I felt like a J.P. Morgan employee during that week, almost as if I was a newbie in an induction week!
Work hard, and play hard! That's one of senses I felt by spending 5 days at J.P. Morgan.
People were respectful to each other as I saw how employees collaborated in open spaces during the work shadowing experience. The employees I spoke to were also very open and welcoming to any queries which we may have had.
The content was very valuable in terms of giving me an idea of a career with JP Morgan. I come from a Chemical Engineering background, and although I did not have enough programming experience, I had a great insight as to what it would be like working in the Technology division of the firm. However, if we find that the Technology division is not for us, we have so many other roles open for us.
Everything Else
All the expenses were paid for (i.e. hotel, train travel). However, if you went out during the evening with the other interns you would have to pay for your expenses. Besides that, the firm paid for our food and entertainment at a bar for one of the nights. It was very enjoyable.
We got to network with the seniors at the company, as well as other interns who were once Spring interns as well as interns who were on their placement year. However, the networking opportunities could be slightly longer if possible. However, it is understandable that the seniors would have little time as they would have busy schedules.
One of the evenings we had a "location" hunt, which was a great challenge as we had the opportunity to bond and meet the other interns and make memories on the way. This challenge made us explore the coastal area of Bournemouth before arriving to the destination. It was great fun!
I really valued the Green Team that the firm has on campus, it gave me a sense that the firm embodies sustainability and appreciates how we treat the environment. Employees can be involved in activities such as Technology for Social Good, they also have summer barbecues and charity events which is great.
Definitely!
