The Role
I enjoyed my work placement. It gave me lots of responsibility and it was also very rewarding. There is a lot of interns so working alongside people who are at the same career stage as you is very inspiring and motivating. The foundation (all the placement students) is well-organized and gives you a continuous support.
I felt very valued by my colleagues, everyone was more than willing to help but also gave me a lot of responsibility. I felt valued even when performing the simplest tasks.
My EPM was very informative and always happy to meet me if I had any queries 8/10. My task manager also gave me advice/support to help me throughout my year 6/10.
For most of my placement I was very busy with multiple projects going on at the same time. However, at times there were few project that I could get involved into. It was compensated by the online learning that IBM provided for its employees.
At the start of the year I was coached and guided, and had regular check backs with my manager, however as I picked the job up, I was given more and more responsibility. I would say it mostly depended on the task manager I was working with at the time. There were times where I could be give a bit more responsibility and where I was running a project end-to-end.
I've learned so much more about HR than I did before, and feel like I understand it a lot more now, the processes, what each function does, and how important it is to the business and its strategy.
The Company
The office was very friendly, and you could always find someone to answer any questions you have. Nonetheless, the age gap between interns and regular employees is massive.
I was informed about my per-placement training two days before just because I asked. However, after this initial bad experience, it was well-thought apart from our laptops/tablets which had the tendency to crash a lot.
I feel that I was to the fair number of trainings as part of the project that I run. Nonetheless, there was not much investment in the training which took place outside of my base location.
Financial Bonus
Working from home
I think that the organization itself offers a great Grad scheme for consultants. I will definitely reapply for the Consulting by Degree programme. Nevertheless, HR as the business unit is not that appealing mostly because of the huge age gap and lack of mobility.
The Culture
Yes there was always plenty of people to speak to, and the interns develop friend groups whom they speak to outside of work and often keep in contact. Our group had regular parties and enjoyed spending time together
I was alright and I could easily manage my finance as long as I did not spend too much money on eating out.
Working in Portsmouth, I couldn't experience as much of the Nightlife as my peers in South Bank. However, the drinks were cheaper and it was easier to get together.
There were several opportunities to get involved in social events and a couple of sports event, but all of them were organised by interns themselves.
