The Role
Overall, I have loved my placement - I didn't just sit about and make tea, I was treated like everyone else, and was given a high level of responsibility, which is what I was looking for in a placement. I have been given the opportunity to extend my placement for another few months to help further develop the skills I have gained.
My colleagues have made me feel like a highly valued member of the team, especially my manager. my colleagues have all taken their time to help me where it is needed, and have given me praise when I have done something well. if I have been struggling with something, my colleagues have taken the time to help me understand/ complete the task.
My manager has taken the time to have one to one meetings with myself to talk about what I am doing well, what skills I can improve and what I can do to improve these skills. I have been given the opportunity to take responsibility on different aspects of my manager's desk, and have been allowed to attend business meeting's to give me an insight into the different responsibilities within her role.
I am usually busy on my desk, and have different daily tasks to complete which help the day fly in. with recruitment, there is always a task to do to keep you busy, even in a quiet period. the only time I am less busy than usual is Christmas time, however this is to be expected
I have been given a high amount of responsibility throughout my placement, which has helped me feel like a valued member of staff, and not just like an intern. Throughout my placement, my manager has added on a bit more responsibility in small amounts, such as managing different jobs that are open, managing candidates, as well as interviewing candidates, and engaging with clients.
The skills I have learned from my placement can be transferred to any job, and will assist me with my degree. Skills include time management, organisation, and verbal and written communication skills. my placement has also given me more confidence when speaking top managers or people who are higher within an organisation, which will help me with interviews in the future.
The Company
There was generally a good atmosphere in the office. Our managing director takes his time each week to tell us areas where the business is doing well, as well as areas of improvement. There are stressful times in the office when deadlines are to be met, however, this was not a fault of Hays, and would be found in any organisation.
I believe that my internship was set up extremely well. y roles and responsibilities were clearly outlined, and more responsibility was only given to when my manager was sure I was comfortable with the tasks I had been working on. training times were clearly outlined and were interesting and memorable, and my manager took to time with me to ensure that I was getting everything I wanted out of my placement.
I was provided with 1st class training, and was flown to London by Hays, who also provided me with my food and accommodation. My training was also personalised to suit me and my role within the organisation, and fitted in well with the skills I had been developing. I also had one to one meetings with my manager to help develop my skills, and was given the opportunity to shadow other colleagues.

I would love to join Hays when I finish graduating. I have been given enough responsibility to know that this could be a future career prospect that I know I am capable of, and enjoy. promotions within the organisation are also clearly demonstrated to ourselves and are encouraged throughout the organisation, which is something that is very important to me.
The Culture
there is a good social scene amongst the placement students, however I feel like Hays could maybe do a bit more to help this, such as setting aside times each period for placement students to catch up with each other to see what is working well for them, and sharing good and bad experiences to help eachother develop our skills further
the cost of living in Belfast is relatively cheap compared to other parts of Belfast. I have not found it any more expensive that I have as a student, and feel that the salary provided by Hays has helped me cover costs of living, as well as leaving me with money to socialise.
there is a perfect balance of nightlife in Belfast, with many bars and clubs around the city centre. this has been beneficial for getting to know colleagues through going for a drink after work, or going out to socialise outside of work with my colleagues. this is something we aim to do every 6 -8 weeks.
Many colleagues within Hays work with charities, and this has provided me with opportunities to volunteer in great events for a great cause. however, apart from this, activities outside work are rarely mentioned, and I believe that clubs or societies being created for colleagues who have similar interests could be of benefit, and help create better relationships with colleagues through out the organisation.
