    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • There have been highs and lows. I have struggled with feeling out of my depth, especially at the beginning. Sometimes there is a lack of communication between the team which can mean it's harder for someone at intern level to feel comfortable to get their point across. That said, I have had the opportunity to work on some really cool projects. I have attended fieldwork in Leeds/York, I have ran my own focus groups, carried out a piece of primary research from brief to debrief which has been extremely fulfilling. I also feel great after I present and get good feedback - I've not only developed skills in business, but also skills in who I am personally.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • We get given a lot of responsibility, and people really value everyones input in meetings including interns. Sometimes there is a bit of exclusivity / segrgation between managers and interns but this rarely causes issues. In general, i feel completely valued by my manager which is one of the reasons i feel like i've been able to grow so much.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I struggled at the beginning of my placement. I felt a distance between me and my manager as we didn't have much one-on-ne time, especially to talk about projects. However, when we work on projects together i feel like she guides me really well and takes the project in a really good direction.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It came in periods, but generally i would say i was very busy. Sometimes i would miss lunch to carry on working, and i often stayed at least 1 hour late to get more work done. This would ususally be at times of debriefs/presentations, so i would want to make sure i was prepared and it was my best work. I enjoy being busy though.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot. I took on huge projects, and led them myself. This was dauting but extremely rewarding. This included my year project, which was my own primary research project; a project for the SW creative/product development teams; a collectibles primary research in which i got to attend the fieldwork in leeds.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The research skills i have developed will be incredibly useful in my dissertation, as I am looking to carry out my own empirical piece of research. I am also hoping to continue my career in the research industry, thus my experience at Disney has put me in good stead to succeed.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Sometimes it was a bit quite, and it felt almost as though people didn't want to speak to each other. I also find it odd when people who sit near each other email? However, most of the time we had a great atmostphere as a team, and our team bonding days were great fun.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • A lot of our projects are ad hoc and so what I worked on came up as business needs changed. however my manager was organised in knowing the kind of things she wanted me to get out of this year and allowed me of help her on all of her projects.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I don't think i was presented with many opportunities to develop my personal skills specifically however the placement itself and what i was able to work on and the things i have learned mean that in turn i have developed 10-fold into a much better and more disciplined person which i am grateful for.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Travel loan

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I don't see any future career opportunities in my role however if i was offered i would be thrilled and i believe i could thrive. With the changes in the business i think most jobs are up in the air and actually it may not be the same company to work for.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah we have 11 people in our research team, all are lovely and easy to get along with and we've been the pub various times. I have a separate friendship group whom i have lunch with most of the time who are fun and we have been out in london a lot.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I live at home which has allowed me to save so much money for my final year at uni which is great. Travel into london is fairly expensive but i bought an annual travel card which allowed me to save a bit of money there. Socialising in london is quite expensive especially eating and drinking a lot!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Expensive. I tend to socialise with my home friends nearer to where i live (north london - watford). It was actually fairly rare that i went out in hammersmith or elsewhere in london due to money issues and i was always quite tired after work to go out anyway so

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The voluntears scheme allowed us , as a research team, to go to a primary school and help paint their outdoors playgorund and fences. It was great to feel like we really made their space look better and made a difference to the school. The teachers were all really thankful which was gratifying.
