The Role
This internship provided a great opportunity to get involved in a variety of 'real work', which included legal research and tasks, but also general business exposure. This mix was both extremely interesting and also useful for both deciding, and helping to get a head start on, a future career path.
From the beginning I was extremely well integrated into the team and relevant business contacts. I have been invited along to all the team events and have had my opinion genuinely sought. By being given genuinely work and relied upon I have felt much more valued that being in a shadowing position, or left to do basic research tasks.
I have been given the right amount of support. I have always have every task explained to me, including what to do, and (most usefully) why it needs doing). Personally, I prefer being left to get on with a project, which was afforded to me. Despite this, i have always felt that I could ask for further support if wanted or needed.
I am never left without anything to do. I am trusted to be in charge of my own working capacity and to decide what is a good amount to take on. As such I always have a number of different tasks concurrently being worked on. I prefer this approach, but could have easily taken on less if desired.
I have been given excellent responsibility. From the beginning I was trusted to have a first draft of contracts. As my internship progressed I have been increasingly trusted to reach out directly to business contacts within the business and external contacts outside of the business. In addition, I have also gone to client events on behalf of the company which perhaps best epitomises the responsibility offered if you want it.
I did my degree prior to the internship rather than as a sandwich year. Definitely, by being given 'real work' this internship has offered exposure to working life. To that extent, problem solving skills, which are perhaps too abstract to be developed through a degree, have been developed by being in this position. This will certainly help with future employment.
The Company
The office is genuinely friendly and a collegiate atmosphere is fostered. There is no one within the office who is unapproachable, and many will go out of their way to offer support if so requested.
There's lots of support leading up to the internship- I was offered support on where to look for accommodation, for instance. There are plenty of induction events to ensure that everyone is welcomed. Additionally, the company takes on a large amounts of interns per year, so there is plenty of internal support and everyone is accustomed to working with interns.
To a large degree. I have been granted exposure to site visits (including film studios and production offices) and I have represented the company at external legal events. Where required or requested time has been taken to offer feedback any other tips or helpful advice. Generally, if you want to make the most of your internship, the copany will invest in you and help you do so.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Not appropriate for my internship (as I have to qualify externally as a solicitor). I understand that in other departments there are good employment prospects.
The Culture
There's plenty going on among other interns. Many interns choose to eat together at lunch or socialise after work. A lot of interns live together, having been put in contact with each other before the internship started. In addition to that there is a facebook group which interns are invited to. There is also a winter ball for interns.
About average for London.
It's in London- you can do what you want.
Yes- there are plenty of films screenings and additionally the company is extremely involved in healthy living and green initiatives.
