The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at IBM. Over the twelve months I have developed so many skills, met so many people and I have had a lot of fun. I've been pushed out my comfort zone on many occasions which has helped me learn a lot. IBM is a fantastic company who have such a huge impact on the World.
As one of 100+ interns (plus many more grads and apprentices) you do sometimes feel like a small fish in a very very large pond. From my experience, IBM do not have a culture that will recognise you for working over-hours but instead you are encouraged to work smarter. Having said this, I have received lots of great feedback from my mangers and immediate team on a frequent basis.
I was given a tremendous amount of support and guidance. I feel very fortunate to have worked under some great managers. My task manager always takes interest in the work I am doing ad will always give advice. My early professional manager has been there to reassure me through tough times as well.
Very busy! I can honestly say that every day on my placement has been jam packed! I have never been short of work and consequently I have been forced to learn to work smarter and improve my ability to prioritise tasks.
I was given a huge amounts of responsibility on placement which included organising important client events and hosting Business Partner meetings. IBM put a lot of trust and belief into their interns and as long as you can act responsibly, you will always be treated like any other full-time IBMer.
With regards to degree studies, I think the soft skills I have built up such as time management and communication skills will certainly aid me in my degree studies. Beyond university, I have also now gained some great experiences which have set me up for a career in technology.
The Company
I was based in the IBM's Southbank office for my placement. Despite having a modern entrance lobby and spectacular Client Centre, the office space does lack a bit of atmosphere and colour. The office can sometimes feel very empty with a lot of people working from home.
I believe the internship was organised very well. All nterns get a formal induction, have frequent reviews and are informed of important events way ahead of time. I was fortunate to also have a task manager who made a lot of effort to develop me on my placement.
There are so many classes, workshops, events and online trainings that you are encouraged to take part in as an intern. With IBM being such a huge company, the world is your oyster and you can learn about so many amazing things.

Working from home
From what I understand there are plenty of Graduate roles to move into but only in one or two areas of the business. Although it is appealing to come back to IBM, it is frustrating that there is not more variety in the Graduate roles on offer.
The Culture
Excellent social scene being based at IBM Southbank. You're in the heart of London and have the opportunity to go out with your team and other interns on many occasions.
It's London so expensive but if you make the effort to find cheaper places and discount offers then they are there for the taking.
The best- Central London
Did IBM provide opportunities to get involved in activities outside the organisation? - Sometimes, when going out for team socials and team bonding trips Were there many opportunities to get involved outside my day-to-day role? - YES! So many opportunities to work with people and learn more about other parts of the business
