The Role
I have been welcomed into the company and been given the same responsibilities as any other recruitment consultant in the business. Support has been available to me whenever I need it to ensure that the tasks I undertake, I am able to complete and fully develop the new skills I have acquired during my time here.
I have been a key part of three different teams, with my fee performance directly contributing towards the teams overall target. There is a huge emphasis on managing your own desk, your own business and so my managers and directors have all spent time with me to help me improve and to congratulate me when necessary. I was given various awards when I had performed well and these were broadcast to the entire office which really made me feel part of the culture at Hays.
Management are always on hand to help out. They are more than happy to take time out of their day to sit down with me to aid with any queries I have for things relating to inside work, as well as outside. Recruitment was a brand new industry, and I would not have been able to succeed or even enjoy my time here if it wasn't for the support and guidance handed to me by my colleagues.
I was never, ever bored. Every day I had things to do and it was in constant variety. From interviewing candidates, meeting with clients, to filling jobs, you will never have a moment to spend wandering what you're going to be doing. It is an ideal placement for those who want to be busy and on their toes.
I was given full responsibility of my own desk and was responsible for finding candidates in search for work, winning the business from clients who were in need of filling vacancies, and everything in-between.
My time management skills have improved drastically. Being so busy during the hours I was in the office meant I had to prioritise which tasks to complete and when to complete them. This has made me a more organised individual and will help me approach large work loads in a much more composed manner.
The Company
The office has been one of the biggest perks. There is not one person who is in the building who I wouldn't want to be working with. The atmosphere has a great balance of being fun when celebrating individual success, but also seriousness when targets need to be met. There have been constant events in the office for St Patricks Day, Xmas, Easter, Halloween etc.
For myself, their has been a clear agenda and end target for me to reach, throughout the year. I completed a project during Nov-Jan and upon the last two weeks of completing it, I was already made aware by my director of what the next step of my time at Hays would be and what my next responsibilities would be.
We were given high quality training which was one of the main attractions for me applying to the placement. The first 2 weeks, my director was by my side for every step in my early development to make sure I learnt quickly and effectively. I was also able to take part in Mod 1 which was 3 days of intense and informative training which greatly aided me in my recruitment consultant role.

Company Parties/Events
I am due to have a discussion with my director and the operations director of the office in a few weeks time to discuss plans for the future. I've been made aware that I should be considering the company as an option once I finish my degree and it will definitely be the first place I apply to when searching for my first role after finishing university.
The Culture
There were 5 interns in total and we have been encouraged through associate/intern days and various tasks to get involved with one another and help each other out. As a result, we have formed a very tightly knit group and I have a fantastic relationship with the other placement students here. I'm sure I will remain in touch with them, long after our year in industry finishes.
Birmingham City Centre can be expensive at times but having been a student and lived here for two years, I knew how to operate to make sure that my costs were kept low. I lived in a student house so was fortunate enough for my rent to be subsidised as well as comfortable
As previously mentioned, I know the city well. However the times outside work with colleagues have been some of the best nights I've had in Birmingham, mainly due to the people in the office knowing of stylish bars to go to, our regulars were top class places which weren't too expensive.
There were a few events going on outside of work including Gung-ho, a five a side tournament, karaoke etc. I've set up a five a side team in my time here and as a result, socialise with colleagues every Tuesday playing football.
