The Role
I have enjoyed my placement as I feel as though I have learnt a lot about the working world and it has made me open my eyes and realise what I want to do when I finish university. I have enjoyed some aspects of the work I have been doing, however a lot of it is very repetitive and everyday is the same.
I do feel valued by my colleagues and part of the team, and I get a long with the people that I do work with well and everyone is always friendly and welcoming. However, sometimes I do feel as though I am just an intern and seen as the youngest person here.
I have had a range of 'managers' throughout my internship so I have often found it difficult to know who to talk to when I need help/advice. I would have benefitted much more from a set programme for me and not having to change from team to team frequently. However, the managers I have had, have been helpful and given me support when I need it.
My days have been varied throughout my internship. Some days I have nothing to do and I have to keep asking for things to do to keep me busy, but then other days I do have a lot to do and then the days go much quicker. But more often than not, I am not busy enough.
I have been given quite a lot of responsibility and often just had to get on with things myself without much help, which I don't mind. However, there are many people that seem to be given a lot more responsibility than I have been, which then keeps them busy everyday.
I have developed many skills, mainly general working life skills that will definitely help me in the future, such as phone skills, email skills, team working etc. I have learnt some HR skills that will help me throughout my degree, however they are mainly just recruitment skills which is only a small aspect of HR.
The Company
The general atmosphere is usually fun as there is a sales culture here. Quite often there is good atmosphere on Friday's and when we have dress down days etc, whereas on normal days it can often be less fun as there isn't much atmosphere at all. However this can be helpful when you need to get on with work.
For me, it was not organised at all as I haven't done anything that I was told I would be doing when I accepted the job offer. I have been moved around a lot as there hasn't been much to do, and even still I am unsure what my 'job role' is. However, I appreciate people's effort to try and keep me busy, but my internship set up was not organised at all.
I have attended a few training sessions in various offices which I feel I have benefitted from, and if I ever ask for extra training or help with anything, someone will always be willing to run through things with me. The intern training scheme I attended in Summer was a 3 days course which was a lot of investment from the company.
Company Parties/Events
I would definitely consider a job within Hays if there was an opportunity in HR available for me, as that's what I want to do after university. However this is unlikely and most of the opportunities that I would be able to make the most of are just in recruitment, which isn't what I want to do for my career.
The Culture
I got on with all of the other placement students here and have definitely made friends that I will keep in touch with once we leave. There has been a few intern social events throughout the year that I have enjoyed, however I think there should be more organised things for us to participate in.
I lived at home throughout the year so it was definitely affordable for me as I only needed to pay for parking. I often spend my weekends in Manchester and it is one of the most affordable cities I have been to in terms of socialising, and I don't think living prices are too expensive either.
Manchester nightlife is really good and there is plenty of variety to choose from. There is something for everyone to enjoy and you'll never struggle to find somewhere to go. Everything is really close together and convenient to get to from wherever you are in the city.
There has been a few activities outside of work to get involved it, but mainly just nights out and that's it. I have got involved with as many social things as I can, however I think more activities should be organised, other than just nights out, such as meals out or gym classes etc
