The Role
I enjoyed working on my placement and I was kept busy with lots of interesting and developing work but it did get tiresome at times and projects were very long and on going. The work was mainly interesting but like any job some tasks where meaningless and didn't end up getting used
I felt valued by my colleagues once I got to the correct standard of work and inputted good ideas but felt a little left out of meetings etc. I think this was mainly because I wasn't a permeant worker and I feel this could have helped make the experience better.
I was given support at times but often required me to ask for it as I wasn't a full time employee they didn't come to me like they would do with others in my office or have catch up meetings with me regularly on careers etc. Also having a manager that was leaving didn't help this as I was between leaders for a while
I was kept busy all day constantly with lots of fulfilling and interesting tasks although other placements in my office didn't get the same this was dependent on my team. I asked for more work as necessary and it was provided which created a good relationship with my team as everything I was given was completed
Given lots of responsibility as much as a full time employee once I had grasped an understanding of the relevant area. Unlike some other placements in my office I was considered and given the work of a full time employee and had just as much input on ideas and suggestions
I have developed lots of skills and become much better at communicating and completing something to a high standard which should really help me in the future with work and studies. I think this placement has set me up extremely well to go back to university and make me more organized
The Company
The general atmosphere in my office was pleasant and good but at times it could be a little dull with people not interacting to much within my team and having lots of their own conversations. It was quite a serious atmosphere within my team due to them being older than me
The placement was extremely well organized with the work I was given as I had a large project for the year which would last around 6 months and had lots of other work I could get involved with. But the placement and getting new people integrated well was not handled so well
My company invested in giving me training in lots of different software's all of which I ended up using on a daily basis in the end. The approach to this was however tutorials and tasks which was a little disappointing and boring to get through and was extremely time consuming
Future employment prospects within the company are unknown as returning to university will delay this but I have been offered a dissertation project within the company. There is a good chance I will be able to return but maybe not to the same facility due to location.
The Culture
No there was no such encouragement by the company and because there was only 4 placements at the site I was based on there was very little interaction as people just weren't made to get along and be friends. This was a disappointment and was one of the hardest parts of the placement
The cost of living was relatively cheap in Sunderland and would be recommended for that. Newcastle was near for social events so short trips could be taken to take advantage out of a large town nearby as Sunderland was quite small and didn't have to many options to make use of
I didn't really experience the night life due to the social setting being so poor or at least not with work. I managed to get other friends out to go to Newcastle which has a great night life but sunderland is a little small and not so many students around
No there weren't any opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work or any provided by work which I thought was rather poor considering that placements and graduates had moved across the country to be here and there was little help to get them integrated into the company and facility
