The Role
Really enjoyed my year working for Caterpillar, brilliant environment to work in and nothing I would have done differently. This year I have learnt so much and I feel it will have a positive impact on my career.
Colleagues always happy to help, treated as an employee and not a placement student. Great to have people locally who can recommend things for me to do while working away from home. Have made friends that are not just bound to working hours.
No question asked is ever left unanswered and support always given in terms of work, career asportations and guidance.
Good mix, tend to be fairly busy and the days fly by. However when in between projects or waiting on lead times etc I have been going out and seeking other things to do.
The right amount, not over burdened with anything I was hugely uncomfortable with. Faced number of challenges and responsibilities which I thought I never would so early on in my working life.
I have gained a huge range of skills that I think will be invaluable for life, communication, practical, computer based skills and product knowledge. Will allow me to return to my degree with a greater engineering knowledge and more confidence in my own ability.
The Company
Good working environment, everyone approachable and helpful. Fun to work in but was measured and professional when it counted.
Overall well organised. Initial first week could have been slightly more seamless, having laptop password etc set up would have allowed me to hit the ground running. Could have benefitted from a program in the first 2/3 weeks to get to know product and business before getting into projects.
Mixture of training, official training mainly workshop based and then training for office/test role was more from colleagues. Would have liked to have completed more official training, with maybe a defined set to be completed by the end of the year.

Have really enjoyed working for Caterpillar, am currently looking to extend past my 12 month contract and I am very interested in returning after my degree.
The Culture
Started off good, however I was in a different building from others so on a day to day don't tend to see everyone else.
Joined a rugby club which is a few streets away from where I am living, cheap housing and I have had an incredibly social year meeting a group of people I will know for years to come.
Thoroughly enjoyed going out locally with rugby friends, also ventured further afield with both rugby and work colleagues. North east has a lot of good places for nightlife.
Lots of things on offer from work colleagues including walking, Heineken cup final, Christmas party and trips away for birthdays etc.
