The Role
I found it enjoyable working with other interns who are in the same situation as me. It was good to learn the basics about work e.g. routine, speaking to people on the phone and writing out emails to clients. There were a lot of intern meetups every quarter where we all shared what we did and went out for drinks which made it a sociable working place.
I definitely felt valued as my team was only small and therefore I felt like i had to contribute a lot. I had a lot of 1-1 with my manager pretty much every morning to discuss what we needed to focus on. I was given work that any other consultant would have to do so it didn't make me feel like an intern.
At the start of the placement I had a lot of training from the company which gave me a lot of guidance. I always asked my manager questions as he sits next to me and I never felt like i was asking too many! The training was also on the job by the colleagues sat next to you.
I had days where i would be very busy and days not so busy. I had a massive database to code which I could always go to if i felt like i had nothing to do. However, because it was just me and my manager i felt like i had quite a bit to do most of the time.
I was given a lot of responsibility. For example i would look after my own jobs and have to pretty much work it start to finish by the initial contact with the candidate, right through telling them if they got the job or not.
I developed some basics skills for example being able to write an email formally as well as being able to speak to clients and candidates confidently. I have also learnt skills for example time management and being able to plasn my day so i can get everything done in the time which is what i will be doing at uni.
The Company
The atmosphere was loud as people are constantly on the phone. It was quite formal at times as a lot of people would be going out on client facing meetings. A lot of people end up eating lunch at their desk which wasn't what i wanted to do, however there was always people to eat lunch with in the breakout room. There were always celebrations of teams hitting personal bests which gave the office a buzz
I would say the placement was quite organised. We were doing the job that everyone else was doing and not just doing admin work. We had meetups with other interns every quarter and we would all discuss ideas or how we were geting on and we all seemed to be on the same track and doing similar things. The intern plan was kind of adapted to your team. For example as it was only me and my manager i ended up doing a lot more candidate work and helping find candidates for the job where as someone else might have done a lot more client work.
The company invested in us a lot. We had a whole weeks training in Birmingham with all the interns where they put you in a hotel near the office. It was very beneficial in helping us learn about the role and also getting to know other interns. We also did a weeks training in your office with some of the directors which was very helpful to. As well they always have workshops which you can go to if you feel like you need more help.

There are a lot of future prospects within the company for example you get promoted based on how well you do which is a motivational point. There is a huge chain of promotions so you know you are working towards something.
The Culture
Yes the social scene was great. There were 5 placement students in Manchester alone so i never felt alone as we would always have lunch together. As well as this we had an intern meetup every quarter which we would go out for some drinks after. It would be nice to meet the interns from the other offices.
I lived at home so had no living costs which was a bonus! There are loads of places to get food from so no problem there. There are also a lot of bars and restaurants to go to after work as it is located right in city centre of Manchester.
The nightlife is really good as there are so many bars to go to after work. We went to a range of places so your not just going to the same one.
There weren't a lot of activities to get involved in outside of work. We did yoga in lunch hours and sometimes office walks but i didn't really know of any outside of work.
