The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my year at Nomura. I have had excellent support from my manager, team and colleagues and have been given a great amount of responsibility which I didn't think I would get as an intern. The culture has allowed me to take part in extra curricular activities, including Public Speaking, which have helped me improve my soft skills.
I have always felt valued by my colleagues. With a buddy, mentor and manager I have had plenty of support throughout the year. I have been given responsibilities that match analysts in my team which have allowed me to feel valued. I have had the opportunity to run meetings and give my opinions.
I have been fortunate enough to have had 2 fantastic managers throughout my time at Nomura. Both of which provided me with weekly one to one meetings where I could voice any concerns. They have been helpful when I have struggled but have also allowed me to find my own way of doing things.
In the first few months of my placement, I felt bored however once I understood more things I gained more responsibility and my workload quickly increased. I have has some slow weeks and some very busy weeks but I have always felt comfortable to bring this up with my manager who has helped me prioritize my work.
I have been given a great amount of responsibility here at Nomura. I have run meetings, made decisions and voiced my opinion and have always felt like I have been listened to and considered in conversations. I have subsequently become a person people come to ask questions to about my project, which I never thought would happen as an intern.
My role isn't directly related to all of my studies however it relates to at least half of my course, these academic skills should help me with my final year. This soft skills I have developed (presentation skills, time management, communication etc.) are invaluable and will definitely be beneficial to me in the future.
The Company
Nomura's culture focuses on a work life balance. This has allowed me to use the gym in my lunch hour as well as taking part in various training courses and public speaking sessions throughout my working week. My team and colleagues have all been lovely to work with and have allowed me to come out of my shell completely.
The process of confirming my placement was seamless. I found the training provided at the beginning was useful, though not directly related to my role, as it gave me a good overview of the Company as a whole. Although my manager signed me up for various training courses these were not made widely available to interns. I would have liked more training throughout the year to add to my knowledge.
In addition to training organised for placement students, I had the opportunity to take part in many more training sessions held for all employees which I found very useful in developing my soft skills. We also had access to an online training portal with plenty of courses and material for my role.

Working from home
I feel I have done well this year and impressed my manager and colleagues. However, we have been told a job is not guaranteed in the same area. Therefore I am unsure of my future employment prospects within the organisation. I will not know until I am back at university whether or not I have managed to secure a role.
The Culture
Yes! I have made a great group of friends from my placement class, as well as with my fellow team members. We have a roof terrace which has been great for networking drinks and socializing with my colleagues. Being in the City of London also provides us with plenty of lunch spots for team bonding.
I have been fortunate enough to live at home this year, if not living is very expensive in London. Socializing outside of the office is also very expensive as we are in the capital. Our roof terrace had subsidized drinks which allowed for affordable socializing. And we got paid enough to be able to afford the expensive costs, hence I have given this category a 4.
Being in the City there are plenty of pubs, bars and clubs around. And popular hot spots such as Shoreditch and Soho are just a tube's ride away! With our roof terrace open on Thursdays as well, it makes it cheaper to have an enjoyable night out with colleagues. There are also karaoke bars nearby!
As charity is a large part of our culture, there has been an opportunity to take part in many charity events including: runs, a drive up to Scotland, bike rides and a hike! Day to day we have a Gym in the building as well as many sports and arts societies. This includes a golf club, chess club, choir and public speaking.
