    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Had an awesome year! Great team and department along with plenty of fellow interns to work and socialise with throuhgout the year. Learnt a great deal about working culture and gained insights into a vast array different departments within the automotive industry. Made lots of connections which is a massive benefit of workring in such a large company. Also spent time at different manufacturing plants, eg BMW Hams Hall and Rolls Royce in Goodwood, as my role involved working with teams from all BMW UK sites.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Took on lots of responsibility within my team from day one and took on more as the year progressed. I felt as if i had an essential function within my team and department which was essential for the success of the department and to an extent companies future. This was because i had duties to a large number of managers across the BMW Group as well as those to my own department.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was sufficent support throughout the year from managers and supervisors. However, i do feel as if there could have been more at times. This could be in the form of scheduled training onsite and offsite as well as proffesionally, which wasnt provided. Although, i beleive the fact there wasnt too much supervision was a benefit as you have to take responsilibty for your actions, work and learn from your mistakes as you progress throughout the year. I dont think i would have learnt so much if i was given so much guidance and had someone guide me throughout the whole year.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The volume of work was extremely high. However, not always the most intelectually stimulating tasks. Never a moment where i had nothing to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Took on lots of responsibility within my team from day one and took on more as the year progressed. I felt as if i had an essential function within my team and department which was essential for the success of the department and to an extent companies future. This was because i had duties to a large number of managers across the BMW Group as well as those to my own department.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • No training was provided, except from a handover with the previous intern. My placement is not relevent to my degree specifically, however, i do feel like i've gained invaluable transferable skills which can be applied in my 3rd year at university. For example, time management and communication skills which are relevent and helpful in all situations. Although, the experience will not assist my final project.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Relaxed, open and friendly.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • First month was very slow as nothing had been set up for me beforehand. Eg no laptop, phone, so i wasnt able to do much except sit and watch for a while. Also felt as if the managers were too busy to help organise things for me in the first month. However, ran smoothly for the rest of the year.

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Extremely limited. Advertised as if there's a high chance of intern - grad conversion. However, when looking at the figures, the reality of being converted from intern to grad is extremely rare.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Great. Football team, socials on weekday evenings and weekends, activities such as paintballing organised, bar crawls. Over 90 interns and lots of them living in the local area. Always something to do with other people.
