    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was amazing. Every day I looked forward to coming into the office. The tema was very welcoming and we had frequent socials which drove up engagement. I always had support if I needed to travel home and was able to Work From Home when required. I left the company feeling valued and useful.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like one of the team from the very beginning and frequently forgot that I was just the intern. I have made lasting friendships and feel that it will be weird going back to University and not seeing everyone every day. I will miss my team and peers a lot.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • We were a small cohort (Finance) of only 4 people and yet we had significant upport from Day 1. ALongside our Intern Head of Year we also had a dedicated mentor who support us from the start and allowed us to talk openly about how we were feeling and how we beliveed we could improve going forward. They made suggestions and allowed us to develop ourselves.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Every day there was a fresh challenge. Month end was the busiest time but mid month allowed for process improvement and learning and development. Expectations on deadlines were firm and fair and Head of Department support was strong. I had several tasks that came every week but more often than not I ended up working on different transofrmation projects each month.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given an incredible level of responsibility at times. My team was very fluid throughout the year and changed on several occasions. This meant that I ended up acting up in order to support the team. I provided support to my Head of Finance on a daily basis and was responsible for work that fed into CFO/Deputy CFO meetings.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The placement allowed for excellent development of the soft-skills required in a modern office. Networking was strongly encouraged from the get-go and eveyrone had time for you. I also became very proficient with all elements of the Microsoft office suite, specifically Excel and the systems within it. I joined thinking I was proficient with Excel and this was definitely not the case.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The Hook office was not the best. The office is currently moing to Reading and this will certainly help. The Hammersmith office was much more vibrant but this will definitely be matched in Reading due to the recruitment boost and significantly better facilities. The move will be occuring in Q4 2019.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Clear plans and fair timelines. Support was strong pre-placement and we were given our roles and spoke to our managers well in advance of our start date. Finance felt very organised and we had a strong handover at the start of the year. We then did the same handover for the next cohort.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had a significant amount of scheme specific learning and development and I would say the company invested a lot in us. The Internship Scheme is a feeder scheme for the graduate scheme and it shows. They want to retain talent so treat you well. The placment is effectively a year long interview.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. I will be accepting the offer if it comes. There is a well trodden path to senior leadership from the internship and graduate schemes. I intend t stay with the firm and push myself up internally as a result. The culture is strongly focused around internal promotions and retaining talent.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It was okay but it could have been improved. This is potentially because a lot of interns lived at home. This meant that we were quite spread out accross the South East. Furthermore, many of us went home at weekends so it was hard to make plans together in the area.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Expensive. Will be barely taking any money forward to final year as a result.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Reading/Basingstoke was average at best.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes in Hammersmith and other offices. No in Hook. I did things with my team though.
