The Role
I really enjoyed my placement. There was a great culture on site and a great deal of diversity when it came to my role. This meant I was able to get a breadth of skills and knowledge during this work placement, which I feel is really valuable for my future careers. The work place was sociable and busy which kept the journey engaging.
My team were great and I was quickly included in the routine team activities and meetings which made me feel really valued. My colleagues were also easy to talk to and very receptive whenever I needed support or help understanding a task. I also had a mentor who's advice I could really value.
My team manager was really supportive. They also gave me unfamiliar areas to work with so that I had knowledge outside of my core role. They took time out of their calendar to go through tasks with me and guide me through correct processes that needed to be taken in order to be successful. It was great for my development.
This fluctuated due to various factors. However, in general, if I felt I was not busy enough, I was able to have an open conversation about this with my manager and we were able to work through ways to resolve this. I had enough extra roles to accompany my routine work.
I was given more and more responsibility gradually throughout my placement. I think the best thing is that you can ask for responsibility and use your performance to really prove yourself in tasks. I think responsibility does come with experience and the right training but it is handled in a fair way.
The industrial knowledge and skill set I have gained will help me massively as it has helped me solidify teachings I already have picked up as part of my degree. The training and development opportunities have made me a better all-rounded person and I believe this will be valuable when going back to university and transitioning from final year into a job.
The Company
Generally, it was a really positive environment. I feel I could talk to anyone and people were really sociable. This does help make your work life balance feel a lot happier and human interaction I guess can be really valuable and healthy. The general facilities are good too as I know this can be important for some people.
It was a pretty solid network. There was good communication of events, important dates and deadlines. The IP scheme was well established and had lots of mentors and supporters from different levels of the company. The extra-curricular events and volunteering prospects were also well organised and extensive which was really great to see.
I was given adequate training for my job role. If I needed extra training I was able to ask for it and there did not ever seem to be any issues surrounding this. As mentioned previously development opportunities were provided by my team leader for new areas at my request.

Company Parties/Events
Really good. I have managed to explore many areas and gain knowledge about the roles GSK has to offer whilst on placement. There is a great opportunity to network and consider future roles. The job openings are well advertised internally and externally which helps the visibility of the prospects available.
The Culture
We all got on great and went out together. We were friendly and supported one another when needed, such as for fundraising and other charity events. It can be quite busy within teams which can make it hard to socialise but still great overall. There were nights out organised too by the IP network.
It was expensive, however I drove.
I did not engage as much in the nightlife.
Yes. There was some great opportunities organised by GSK. Many were specifically tailored towards IP students which meant a lot of us took part in these together and it was also a great opportunity to broaden our skill set and network. My team also engaged in activities which I was invited to.
