The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed the placement working at unilever in various teams. The placement has been well organised by HR. I have been well informed by HR and the placement team throughout. My only bug bare is being promised a grad scheme for high performance, which was not offered to anyone despite promising places.
I felt valued by my colleagues to some extent. If my colleagues were aware I was a student I would have been valued less. I used to hide the fact that I was a student so that they would trust my opinion more. I dont think students are valued in the company - based on pay and how they made me feel for work.
I had a line manager and 3 contact managers who I could also reach out to for any issue that arose that I couldnt or didnt want to discuss with my direct manager which may affect my work. I was also given a buddy so I had a big network support system.
I was very busy. This was because i managed my own work and wanted to busy. The work can be difficult to find and i found myself bored at times looking outside my role for work which i was then told not to do by my specific manager however this is encouraged in the company.
by chance i was given a huge amount of responsibility as someone in my team got promotion and moved role therefore i took up their role. this meant that i was managing projects at a senior level and getting a lot of exposure and experience. however, there are other students in my team who havent been as lucky and there isnt work there for them to do.
I think i developed a lot of soft skills like confidence, presenting skills and working with a varity of people however I was not taken to any training sessions on tools or process which would have been very useful to my job and experience. It would have been good to attain a qualification alongisde placement
The Company
the atmosphere was very relaxed, the dress code is also relaxed e.g. jeans trainers t shirt and we were allowed to work from home and manage our own time. I think this was good for me but some other students would struggle managing own time. everyone was very friendly and encouraging. Not much socialising
the placement was organised to a point. the support system was good, but i didnt feel like i was informed every step of the way. I was mislead for grad job opportunities and confusion over pay/ activities / socialising. Could have done with slightly more guidance from HR but my team around me were great
No they did not. I was offered free training tools and to select time to practice these courses but this fell through in my 3rd week. They did not allow me to take time out as I had other things to do in my role which didnt give time for training.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
Not a growing area in the company. Think they are cutting down UK business as a whole due to brexit, as is the current employement market. Therefore no one on the scheme was offered a job. maybe future years will have better luck that we did and the market will pick up
The Culture
no there was nothing organised by the company which there should have been
London. Says it all. Was very very expensive and the pay doesnt cover this. It is very hard to live off the pay given, despite subsidised gym. Travel, rent and living costs are above and beyond the salary. salary is same for those work in the northern parts of the company which seems unfair there should be differences between locales
very good and very fun, london is very busy :)
Not sponsored by the business but individually with university friends
